ศตวรรษที่ 21 ถือเป็นช่วงเวลาที่ท้าท้ายความสามารถของมนุษยชาติ เพราะเป็นยุคที่โลกต้องเผชิญกับความเปลี่ยนแปลงที่เกิดขึ้นอย่างรวดเร็ว และข้อมูลข่าวสารทุกอย่างก็ไม่ได้จำกัดอยู่เพียงรอบตัวเราอีกต่อไป แค่เพียงคลิกที่ปลายนิ้ว เราก็สามารถก้าวข้ามพรมแดนไปได้ทุกซอกทุกมุมโลก ซึ่งแวดวงทางการศึกษาทั่วโลกต่างก้าวพ้นรูปแบบการเรียนการสอนที่ใช้ครูเป็นศูนย์กลาง มาเป็นการเรียนรู้ในแบบกระบวนทัศน์ใหม่ เรียกได้ว่าเป็นการจัดการศึกษายุคฐานแห่งเทคโนโลยี หรือ Technology Based Paradigm ในขณะทีประเทศไทยได้เล็งเห็นความสำคัญและมุมมองของการเตรียมเด็กไทยสู่ศตวรรษที่ 21 ในประเด็นดังต่อไปนี้







คุณลักษณะของเด็กไทยในศตวรรษที่ 21 จะต้องมีคุณลักษณะที่สำคัญ 3 ประการ

ประการแรก คือ มีทักษะที่หลากหลาย เช่น สามารถทำงานร่วมกับคนเยอะ ๆ ได้อย่างรวดเร็ว รับผิดชอบงานได้ด้วยตนเอง และรู้จักพลิกแพลงกระบวนการแก้ไขปัญหาได้

ประการที่สอง คือ มองโลกใบนี้เป็นโลกใบเล็ก ๆ ไม่ได้จำกัดขอบเขตอยู่เฉพาะประเทศไทย เพื่่อมองหาโอกาสใหม่ ๆ ที่มีอยู่อย่างมากมาย

ประการสุดท้าย คือ เด็กไทยยุคใหม่ต้องมีทักษะด้านภาษา เพราะหากพูดหรือใช้แต่ภาษาไทยก็เหมือนกับมี "กะลา"มาครอบไว้




การศึกษาในศตวรรษที่ 21 ครูจะต้องปรับแนวทางการเรียนการสอน (pedagogy) โดยครูจะต้องทำให้เด็กรักที่จะเรียนรู้ตลอดชีวิต และมีเป้าหมายในการสอนที่จะทำให้เด็กมีทักษะชีวิต ทักษะการคิด และทักษะด้านไอที ซึ่งไอทีในที่นี้ไม่ได้หมายถึง ใช้คอมพิวเตอร์เป็นหรือใช้ไอแพดเป็น แต่หมายถึงการที่เด็กรู้ว่า เมื่อเขาอยากรู้เรื่องใดเรื่องหนึ่งเขาจะไปตามหาข้อมูล (data) เหล่านั้นได้ที่ไหน และเมื่อได้ข้อมูลมาเด็กต้องวิเคราะห์ได้ว่าข้อมูลเหล่านั้นมีความน่าเชื่อถือเพียงใด และสามารถแปลงข้อมูลเป็นความรู้ (knowledge) ได้ ซึ่งสิ่งเหล่านี้ต้องเกิดจากการฝึกฝน ครูจะต้องให้เด็กได้มีโอกาสทดลองด้วยตนเอง
