ในปี พศ. 2514 Mr.Vilas Bonnag รองประธานแหลมทองมอเตอร์สปอร์ทคลับ พร้อมด้วย Mr.Garla Hartawa ผู้หลงใหลรถโบราณ และ Mr.Font Berm-Bazing ผู้ซึ่งเคยเป็นเจ้าของรถ เบนท์ลีย์ 1924 อันน่าภาคภูมิ ได้ร่วมมือกันจัดงานประกวดรถโบราณขึ้นเป็นครั้งแรกในประเทศไทย
ความสำเร็จจากการจัดงานดังกล่าว ทำให้เกิดแนวความคิดที่จะก่อตั้งองค์กร เพื่อส่งเสริมให้มีการปกปักรักษามรดกด้านรถยนต์ในประเทศไทย ดังนั้น ในวันที่ 25 กรกฎาคม พศ. 2516 จึงมีการจดทะเบียน “สมาคมรถโบราณลุฟท์ฮันซา” หรือ LUFTHANSA VINTAGE CAR CLUB (LHVCC) อย่างเป็นทางการกับกรมวัฒนธรรม โดยมีสายการบินลุฟท์ฮันซา เยอรมนี เป็นผู้สนับสนุนรายแรก
ในปี พศ. 2527 บริษัท คาสตรอล (ประเทศไทย) จำกัด ได้รับเป็นผู้อุปถัมภ์ร่วมอีกรายหนึ่ง จึงได้เปลี่ยนชื่อสมาคมเป็น “สมาคมรถโบราณลุฟท์ฮันซา-คาสตรอล”
และเมื่อวันที่ 1 มกราคม พศ. 2537 ได้เปลี่ยนชื่อสมาคมเป็น “สมาคมรถโบราณคาสตรอล” เนื่องด้วยข้อจำกัดด้านเงินทุน ทำให้ลุฟท์ฮันซาจำต้องยุติการสนับสนุนสมาคม ฯ จึงเหลือ คาสตรอล เป็นผู้อุปถัมภ์เพียงรายเดียว
ต่อมาเมื่อวันที่ 4 มิถุนายน พศ. 2546 กระทรวงวัฒนธรรม และสำนักงานตำรวจแห่งชาติ ได้รับรองการเปลี่ยนชื่อใหม่ของสมาคม ฯ อย่างเป็นทางการว่า “สมาคมรถโบราณแห่งประเทศไทย”
นับแต่ปี พศ. 2516 เป็นต้นมา สมาคมรถโบราณ ฯ ได้จัดงานประกวดรถโบราณขึ้นเป็นประจำทุกปี โดยมอบรางวัลให้แก่รถที่ดีที่สุดในแต่ละรุ่น รางวัลขับรถดี และรางวัลเครื่องแต่งกายงามสมสมัย งานประกวดรถโบราณดังกล่าวได้รับความนิยมจากสาธารณชน และเป็นที่ยอมรับของบรรดาสื่อมวลชนเป็นอย่างดี ปัจจุบันงานประกวดรถโบราณ จึงบรรจุไว้ในปฏิทินกิจกรรมของกรุงเทพมหานคร เป็นประจำทุกปี
