ไตรลักษณ์
สิ่งทั้งหลายทั้งปวงประกอบอยู่ด้วยลักษณะอันเรียกว่า ไตรลักษณ์ หรือลักษณะ 3 ประการคือ
1. อนิจจัง แปลว่า ไม่เที่ยง มีหมายความว่า สิ่งทั้งหลายมีลักษณะเปลี่ยนแปลงอยู่เสมอไป ไม่มีความคงที่ตายตัว
2. ทุกขัง แปลว่า เป็นทุกข์ มีหมายความว่า สิ่งทั้งหลายทั้งปวงมีลักษณะที่เป็นทุกข์มองดูแล้วน่าสังเวชใจ ทำให้เกิดความทุกข์ใจแก่ผู้ที่ไม่มีความเห็นอย่างแจ้มแจ้งในสิ่งนั้นๆ
3. อนัตตา แปลว่า ไม่ใช่ตัวตน มีความหมายว่า ทุกสิ่งทุกอย่างไม่มีความหมายแห่งความเป็นตัวเป็นตน ไม่มีลักษณะอันใดที่จะทำให้เรายึดถือได้ว่ามันเป็นตัวเราของเรา ถ้าเห็นอย่างแจ่มแจ้งชัดเจนถูกต้องแล้ว ความรู้สึกที่ว่า ไม่มีตน จะเกิดขึ้นมาเองในสิ่งทั้งปวง แต่ที่เราไปหลงเห็นว่าเป็นตัวเป็นตนนั้น ก็เพราะความไม่รู้อย่างถูกต้องนั่นเอง
อนิจจัง ทุกขัง อนัตตา นี้คือการประกาศความจริงออกไปว่า สิ่งปรุงแต่งทั้งปวงไม่เที่ยง สิ่งปรุงแต่งทั้งปวงเป็นทุกข์ สิ่งทั้งปวงไม่ใช่ตัวตน
ขอให้ทราบว่า ลักษณะสามัญ 3 ประการนี้ พระพุทธเจ้าทรงสั่งสอนมากกว่าคำสั่งสอนอื่นๆ ในบรรดาคำสั่งสอนทั้งหลายจะนำมารวบยอดอยู่ที่การเห็น อนิจจัง ทุกขัง อนัตตา นี้ทั้งนั้น บางทีก็กล่าวตรงๆ บางทีก็พูดด้วยโวหารอย่างอื่น แต่ใจความมุ่งแสดง ความจริงอย่างเดียวกัน
เมื่อได้กล่าวถึงหลักที่ว่า เราต้องรู้ว่าสิ่งทั้งปวงเป็นอะไร และต้องปฏิบัติอย่างไร จึงจะตรงต่อกฏธรรมชาติของสิ่งทั้งปวง ดังนี้แล้ว หลักในพระบาลีก็มีอีกพวกหนึ่งเรียกว่า โอวาทปาฏิโมกข์ แปลว่า คำสอนที่เป็นประธานของคำสอนทั้งหมด มีอยู่ 3 ข้อสั้นๆ คือ ไม่ทำความชั่วทั้งปวง ทำความดีให้เต็มที่ และทำจิตใจให้สะอาดปราศจากความเศร้าหมอง นี้เป็นหลักสำหรับปฏิบัติ
เมื่อรู้ว่าสิ่งทั้งปวงไม่เที่ยง เป็นทุกข์ ไม่ใช่ตัวตน ยึดถือไม่ได้ และไปหลงใหลด้วยไม่ได้ เราต้องปฏิบัติต่อสิ่งทั้งปวงให้ถูกต้องด้วยความระมัดระวัง คือเว้นจาการทำชั่ว หมายถึง การละโมบ โลภลาภด้วยกิเลส ไม่ลงทุนด้วยการฝืนศีลธรรมขนบธรรมเนียมต่างๆ เพื่อไปทำความชั่ว อีกทางหนึ่งนั้นให้ทำแต่ความดีตามที่บัณฑิตสมมุติตกลงกันว่าเป็นคนดี แต่ทั้งสองข้อนี้เป็นเพียงขั้นศีลธรรม ข้อที่สามที่ว่า ทำจิตใจให้บริสุทธิ์หมดจดจากเครื่องเศร้าหมองโดยประการนั้นนั่นแหละ เป็นตัวพุทธศาสนาโดยตรง หมายความว่าทำจิตใจให้เป็นอิสระ ถ้ายังไม่เป็นอิสระจากอำนาจครอบงำของสิ่งทั้งปวงแล้ว จะเป็นจิตใจที่สะอาดบริสุทธิ์ไปไม่ได้ จิตจะเป็นอิสระก็ต้องมาจากความรู้อะไรเป็นอะไรถึงที่สุด ถ้ายังไม่รู้จะไปหลงรัก หรือหลงชังอย่างใดอย่างหนึ่งหลีกเลี่ยงไม่ได้ แล้วจะเรียกว่าเป็นอิสระแท้จริงได้อย่างไร คนเรามีความรู้สึกอยู่สองอย่างเท่านั้น คือความพอใจกับไม่พอใจ
