ระบบการศึกษาแห่งชาติของ สปป. ลาวแบ่งเป็น 2 ระบบ คือ การศึกษาในระบบ และการศึกษานอกระบบมีดังนี้

การศึกษาในระบบ ประกอบด้วย

ก. ระดับสามัญศึกษา คือ เตรียมอนุบาล (เลี้ยงเด็ก) อนุบาล 3 ปี ประถม 5 ปี มัธยมต้น 3 ปี มัธยมปลาย 3 ปี
หมายเหตุ : การศึกษาระดับประถมที่ใช้เวลาในการศึกษา 5 ปี เด็กจะเริ่มเข้าเรียนเมื่ออายุ 6 ปี การศึกษาในระดับนี้คือเป็นการศึกษาภาคบังคับ เด็กทุกคนต้องจบการศึกษาในระดับนี้ แต่ในทางปฏิบัติการศึกษาภาคบังคับจะมีผลดีแต่เฉพาะเด็กในเมืองใหญ่เท่านั้น เนื่องจากลาวมีพื้นที่ประเทศกว้างขวางและประชากรกระจายกันอยู่

ข. ระดับอาชีวะศึกษา ระดับประกาศนียบัตรวิชาชีพ ระดับช่างเทคนิค และระดับประกาศนียบัตรวิชาชีพชั้นสูง

ค. ระดับอุดมศึกษา มีมหาวิทยาลัย 3 แห่งคือ
(1) มหาวิทยาลัยแห่งชาติลาว นครหลวงเวียงจันทน์ (National university of Laos)
(2) มหาวิทยาลัยสุพานุวง แขวงหลวงพระบาง
(3) มหาวิทยาลัยจำปาสัก แขวงจำปาสัก

สำหรับมหาวิทยาลัยแห่งชาติลาว (National university of Laos) เรียน 5 - 7 ปี มี 6 วิทยาเขต 10 คณะวิชา 1 วิทยาลัย และ 1 ศูนย์ คือ คณะ ศึกษาศาสตร์ วิทยาศาสตร์ สังคมวิทยาศาสตร์ ภาษาศาสตร์ เศรษฐศาสตร์และการคุ้มครอง ป่าไม้ เกษตรศาสตร์ วิทยาศาสตร์การแพทย์ วิศวกรรมและสถาปัตยกรรมศาสตร์ นิติศาสตร์และรัฐศาสตร์ วิทยาลัยวิทยาศาสตร์พื้นฐาน ศูนย์พัฒนาครู และโรงเรียนประถมและมัธยมสาธิต

ปี 2551 มหาวิทยาลัยแห่งชาติลาวได้เปิดสอนระดับปริญญาเอก เป็นโครงการร่วมมือกับมหาวิทยาลัยเศรษฐกิจของประเทศเวียดนาม

การศึกษาระบบครู (ครุศาสตร์) ของ สปป.ลาว แบ่งออกเป็น
- โรงเรียนสร้างครูประถม ใช้เวลาเรียน 2 ปี
- วิทยาลัยครูมัธยมศึกษา ใช้เวลาเรียน 3 ปี
- คณะศึกษาศาสตร์ ใช้เวลาเรียน 5 ปี
การศึกษานอกระบบโรงเรียน มี 3 ประเภทคือ ฝึกอบรมผู้ใหญ่ที่อ่านและเขียนหนังสือไม่เป็น ยกระดับวิชาชีพให้แก่ผู้ใหญ่ และยกระดับวิชาการให้แก่เจ้าหน้าที่ และพนักงาน

นอกจากนี้มีการศึกษาภาคเอกชน ที่อนุญาตให้เอกชนจัดการเรียนการสอนในระดับเตรียมอนุบาลถึงระดับปริญญาตรี และปริญญาโท
