ถึงช่วงปลายปีทีไร ชาวไทยเราก็มีเรื่องฉลองอีกแล้ว ไม่ว่าจะเป็นวันปีใหม่หรือวันคริสต์มาสที่กำลังจะเข้ามาถึง แม้ว่าวันคริสต์มาสนี่ดูเหมือนจะไม่ค่อยเกี่ยวข้องกับคนไทยที่นับถือศาสนาพุทธสักเท่าไร แต่พี่ไทยซะอย่าง ฉลองได้ทุกเทศกาลอยู่แล้ว แต่ก่อนที่จะไปฉลองกัน ลองมารู้จักกับวันคริสต์มาสก่อนดีไหม

ตำนานวันคริสต์มาส

คำว่า "คริสต์มาส" เป็นคำทับศัพท์ภาษาอังกฤษว่า Christmas มาจากคำภาษาอังกฤษโบราณว่า Christes Maesse ที่แปลว่า "บูชามิสซาของพระคริสตเจ้า" ซึ่งพบครั้งแรกในเอกสารโบราณที่เป็นภาษาอังกฤษในปี ค.ศ. 1038 และในปัจจุบันคำนี้ก็ได้เปลี่ยนมาเป็นคำว่า Christmas

เทศกาล Christmas หรือ X’Mas ตรงกับวันที่ 25 ธันวาคมของทุกปี ซึ่งวันที่ 25 ธันวาคมนั้นเป็นวันประสูติของพระเยซู ศาสดาแห่งศาสนาคริสต์ โดยพระองค์ประสูติที่เมืองเบ็ธเลเฮ็มและเติบโตที่เมืองนาซาเรท ซึ่งปัจจุบันคือประเทศอิสราเอล ตามหลักฐานในพระคัมภีร์ได้บันทึกไว้ว่า พระเยซูเจ้าประสูติในสมัยที่จักรพรรดิซีซาร์ ออกุสตุส แห่งจักรวรรดิโรมัน ซึ่งทรงสั่งให้จดทะเบียนสำมะโนครัวทั่วทั้งแผ่นดิน โดยฝ่ายคีรีนิอัส เจ้าเมืองซีเรียก็รับนโยบายไปปฏิบัติให้มีการจดทะเบียนสำมะโนครัวทั่วทั้งอาณาเขต แต่ในพระคัมภีร์ ไม่ได้ระบุว่า พระเยซูประสูติวันหรือเดือนอะไร
ด้านนักประวัติศาสตร์ก็มีความเห็นที่ต่างออกไปโดยได้วิเคราะห์ว่า เดิมทีวันที่ 25 ธันวาคม เป็นวันที่จักรพรรดิเอาเรเลียนแห่งโรมัน กำหนดให้เป็นวันฉลองวันเกิดของสุริยะเทพ ตั้งแต่ปี ค.ศ.274 ชาวโรมันซึ่งส่วนใหญ่นับถือเทพเจ้าฉลองวันนี้เสมือนว่า เป็นวันฉลองของพระจักรพรรดิไปในตัวด้วย เพราะจักรพรรดิก็เปรียบเสมือนดวงอาทิตย์ ที่ให้ความสว่างแก่ชีวิตมนุษย์ แต่ชาวคริสต์ที่อยู่ในจักรวรรดิโรมัน รวมถึงชาวโรมันที่เปลี่ยนไปนับถือคริสต์อึดอัดใจที่จะฉลองวันเกิดของสุริยเทพ จึงหันมาฉลองการบังเกิดของพระเยซูซึ่งเปรียบเสมือนความสว่างของโลก และเหมือนดวงจันทร์เป็นความสว่างในตอนกลางคืนแทน หลังจากที่ชาวคริสต์ถูกควบคุมเสรีภาพทางศาสนาตั้งแต่ปี ค.ศ. 64-313 จนถึงวันที่ 25 ธันวาคม ปี ค.ศ.330 ชาวคริสต์จึงเริ่มฉลองคริสต์มาสอย่างเป็นทางการและเปิดเผย

เทศกาลคริสต์มาสจึงเป็นวันแห่งการเฉลิมฉลองวันประสูติของพระเยซู และเป็นการฉลองความรักที่พระเจ้ามีต่อมนุษย์โลก โดยส่งบุตรชาย คือ "พระเยซู" ลงมาเกิดเป็นมนุษย์เพื่อช่วยไถ่บาป และช่วยให้มนุษย์รอดพ้นจากการทำชั่วนั่นเอง ดังนั้นในวันนี้ถือเป็นวันที่มีความหมายสำคัญชาวคริสต์ทั่วโลก และมีการส่งบัตรอวยพร ให้ของขวัญ แก่กันและกัน รวมทั้งประดับประดาตกแต่งบ้านเรือนด้วยแสงไฟ และต้นคริสต์มาสอย่างสวยงาม

องค์ประกอบในงานคริสต์มาส

ซานตาครอส

เป็นสิ่งแรกๆ ที่คนจะนึกถึงในฐานะสัญลักษณ์ของวันคริสต์มาส ซึ่งว่ากันว่าซานตาคลอสคนแรก คือ นักบุญ (เซนต์) นิโคลัส ผู้เป็นสังฆราชแห่งเมืองไมรา มีชีวิตอยู่ในศตวรรษที่ 4 และเหตุที่ได้รับการยกย่องว่าเป็นซานตาครอสคนแรก มาจากวันหนึ่งที่ท่านปีนขึ้นไปบนหลังคาบ้านของเด็กหญิงยากจนคนหนึ่ง แล้วทิ้งถุงเงินลงไปทางปล่องไฟ บังเอิญถุงเงินหล่นไปทางถุงเท้าที่เด็กหญิงแขวนตากไว้ข้างเตาผิงพอดี

นักบุญนิโคลัส นั้นเป็นนักบุญที่ชาวฮอลแลนด์นับถือว่าเป็นนักบุญผู้อุปถัมภ์ของเด็กๆ เมื่อชาวฮอลแลนด์กลุ่มหนึ่งอพยพไปอยู่ในสหรัฐฯ ก็ยังรักษาประเพณีการฉลองนักบุญ นิโคลาส ในวันที่ 5 ธันวาคม เอาไว้ ซึ่งหมายถึงนักบุญนี้จะมาเยี่ยมเด็กๆ และเอาของขวัญมาให้เด็กอื่นๆ ที่ไม่ใช่ลูกหลานของชาวฮอลแลนด์ที่อพยพมา ประเพณีนี้จึงเริ่มเป็นที่รู้จักและแพร่หลายในอเมริกา โดยมีการเปลี่ยนแปลงบางอย่าง คือ ชื่อนักบุญนิโคลัสก็เปลี่ยนเป็น ซานตาคลอส และแทนที่จะเป็นสังฆราชก็กลายเป็นชายแก่ที่อ้วนและใส่ชุดสีแดง อาศัยอยู่ที่ขั้วโลกเหนือ มีเลื่อนเป็นยานพาหนะที่มีกวางเรนเดียร์ลาก และจะมาเยี่ยมเด็กทุกคนในโลกนี้ในโอกาสคริสต์มาส โดยลงมาทางปล่องไฟของบ้านเพื่อเอาของขวัญมาให้เด็กเหล่านั้นตามความประพฤติของเขา

ถึงแม้ซานตาคลอสจะเป็นเพียงตำนานที่เกิดขึ้นมาเพื่อเฉลิมฉลองวันคริสต์มาสก็ตาม แต่ก็เป็นสัญลักษณ์ที่รวมเอาวิญญาณและความหมายของคริสต์มาสไว้อย่างมากมาย อาทิ ความปิติยินดีชื่นชม ความโอบอ้อมอารี ความรัก และความเป็นกันเอง

ถุงเท้า

จากที่นักบุญนิโคลัสได้ปีนขึ้นไปบนปล่องไฟของบ้านเด็กหญิงยากจน เพื่อที่จะมอบเหรียญเงินให้เป็นของขวัญ แต่เหรียญนั้นกลับตกไปอยู่ในถุงเท้าที่เด็กหญิงแขวนตากไว้หน้าเตาผิง พอรุ่งเช้าเด็กหญิงตื่นมาเจอเหรียญเงินในถุงเท้าจึงดีใจมาก และกลายเป็นจุดเริ่มต้นของการที่ผู้คนมากมายต่างพากันแขวนถุงเท้าคริสต์มาสไว้ เพื่อหวังจะได้รับของขวัญเช่นเดียวกันบ้าง

ต้นคริสต์มาส

นอกจากนี้อีกอย่างที่ขาดไม่ได้ก็คือ ต้นคริสต์มาส ซึ่งต้นคริสต์มาสก็คือต้นสนที่นำมาประดับประดาด้วยลูกแอปเปิ้ลและขนมปังเพื่อระลึกถึงศีลมหาสนิท และก็ได้มีวิวัฒนาการที่เปลี่ยนแปลงไปเรื่อยจนมาถึงการประดับด้วยดวงไฟหลากสีสัน ขนม และของขวัญ อย่างในทุกวันนี้ การตกแต่งแบบนี้ต้องย้อนไปในศตวรรษที่ 8 เมื่อเซนต์บอนิเฟส มิชชันนารีชาวอังกฤษที่เดินทางไปประกาศเรื่องพระเจ้าในเยอรมนี ได้ช่วยเด็กที่กำลังจะถูกฆ่าเป็นเครื่องสังเวยบูชาที่ใต้ต้นโอ๊ก

โดยเมื่อโค่นต้นโอ๊กทิ้งก็ได้พบต้นสนเล็กๆ ต้นหนึ่งขึ้นอยู่ที่โคนต้นโอ๊ก ท่านจึงขุดให้คนที่ร่วมพิธีกรรมเหล่านั้นเพื่อเป็นสัญลักษณ์ของชีวิต และตั้งชื่อว่า ต้นกุมารพระคริสต์ ต่อมา มาร์ติน ลูเธอร์ ผู้นำคริสตจักรชาวเยอรมัน ตัดต้นสนไปตั้งในบ้านในเดือนธันวาคม ปี ค.ศ.1540 หลังจากนั้นในศตวรรษที่ 19 ต้นคริสต์มาสจึงเริ่มแพร่ไปสู่ประเทศอังกฤษและทั่วโลก และอีกเหตุผลที่ใช้ต้นสนก็เพราะว่ามันหาง่าย

ในสมัยโบราณนั้นต้นคริสต์มาส หมายถึง ต้นไม้ในสวนสวรรค์ ซึ่งอาดัมและเอวาไปหยิบผลไม้มากิน และทำบาป ไม่เชื่อฟังพระเจ้า โดยตามพระคัมภีร์นั้นได้เปรียบพระเยซูเจ้าเสมือนเป็นต้นไม้แห่งชีวิต ซึ่งเป็
