ปลานิลได้ถูกนำเข้ามาในประเทศไทยครั้งแรกโดยสมเด็จพระอิสริยยศมกุฎราชกุมารแห่งประเทศญี่ปุ่น ทรงจัดส่งปลานิลขนาดความยาว ประมาณ 9 เซนติเมตร จำนวน 50 ตัว มาทูลเกล้าฯ ถวายแด่พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวภูมิพลอดุลยเดช เมื่อวันที่ 25 มีนาคม 2508 ในระยะแรกได้ทรงพระกรุณา โปรดเกล้าฯ ให้ปล่อยลงเลี้ยงในบ่อดินเนื้อที่ประมาณ 10 ตารางเมตร บริเวณสวนจิตรลดา พระราชวังดุสิต เมื่อเลี้ยงมา 5 เดือนเศษ ปรากฏว่ามีลูกปลาเกิดขึ้นเป็นจำนวนมาก จึงได้ทรงพระกรุณา โปรดเกล้าฯ ให้เจ้าหน้าที่สวนหลวงขุดบ่อขึ้นใหม่อีก 6 บ่อ มีเนื้อที่เฉลี่ยบ่อละประมาณ 70 ตารางเมตร ซึ่งในโอกาสนี้พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวได้ทรงย้ายพันธุ์ปลาด้วยพระองค์เอง จากบ่อเดิมไปปล่อยในบ่อใหม่ทั้ง 6 บ่อ เมื่อวันที่ 1 กันยายน 2508 ต่อจากนั้น ทรงพระกรุณาโปรดเกล้าฯ ให้กรมประมง จัดส่งเจ้าหน้าที่วิชาการมาตรวจสอบการเจริญเติบโตเป็นประจำทุกเดือน โดยที่ปลานิลนี้เป็นปลาจำพวกกินพืช เลี้ยงง่าย มีรสดี ออกลูกดก เจริญเติบโตได้รวดเร็ว ในระยะเวลา 1 ปี จะมีน้ำหนักประมาณครึ่งกิโลกรัม และมีความยาวประมาณ 1 ฟุต จึงได้มีพระราชประสงค์ที่จะให้ปลาชนิดนี้แพร่ขยายพันธุ์ อันจะเป็นประโยชน์แก่พสกนิกรของพระองค์ต่อไป ดังนั้นเมื่อวันที่ 17 มีนาคม 2509 จึงทรงพระกรุณาโปรดเกล้าฯ พระราชทานชื่อปลาชนิดนี้ว่า "ปลานิล"และได้พระราชทานปลานิล ขนาดยาว 3-5 เซนติเมตร จำนวน 10,000 ตัว ให้แก่ กรมประมงนำไปเพาะเลี้ยงขยายพันธุ์ ที่แผนกทดลองและเพาะเลี้ยงภายในบริเวณเกษตรกลางบางเขนและที่สถานีประมงต่าง ๆ ทั่วพระราชอาณาจักร รวม 15 แห่ง เพื่อดำเนินการเพาะเลี้ยงขยายพันธุ์พร้อมกัน ซึ่งเมื่อปลานิลแพร่ขยายพันธุ์ออกไปได้มากเพียงพอแล้ว จึงได้แจกจ่ายให้แก่ราษฎรนำไปเพาะเลี้ยงตามความต้องการต่อไป
