วันวาเลนไทน์ นั้นมีมาตั้งแต่สมัยจักรวรรดิโรมัน ในกรุงโรมสมัยก่อนนั้น วันที่ 14 กุมภาพันธ์ จะเป็นวันเฉลิมฉลองของจูโน่ ซึ่งเป็นราชินีแห่งเหล่าเทพและเทพธิดาของโรมัน ชาวโรมันรู้จักเธอในนามของเทพธิดาแห่ง อิสตรีและการแต่งงาน และในวันถัดมาคือวันที่ 15 กุมภาพันธ์ ก็จะเป็นวันเริ่มต้นงานเลี้ยงของ Lupercalia การดำเนินชีวิตของเด็กหนุ่มและเด็กสาวในสมัยนั้นจะถูกแยกจากกันอย่างเด็ดขาด แต่อย่างไรก็ตาม ยังมีประเพณี อย่างนึง ซึ่งเด็กหนุ่มสาวยัง สืบทอดต่อกันมา คือ คืนก่อนวันเฉลิมฉลอง Lupercalia นั้นชื่อของเด็กสาวทุกคนจะถูกเขียนลงในเศษกระดาษเล็ก ๆ และจะใส่เอาไว้ในเหยือก เด็กหนุ่มแต่ละคนจะดึงชื่อของเด็กสาวออกจากเหยือก แล้วหลังจากนั้นก็จะจับคู่กันในงานเฉลิมฉลอง บางครั้งการจับคู่นี้ ท้ายที่สุดก็จะจบลงด้วยการ ที่เด็กหนุ่มและเด็กสาวทั้งสองนั้นได้ตกหลุมรักกันและแต่งงานกันในที่สุด
ภายใต้การปกครองของจักรพรรดิคลอดิอุสที่สอง (Claudius II) นั้น กรุงโรมได้เกิดสงครามหลายครั้ง และคลอดิอุสเองก็ประสบกับปัญหาในการที่จะหาทหารจำนวนมากมายมหาศาลมาเข้าร่วมในศึกสงคราม และเขาเชื่อว่าเหตุผลสำคัญก็คือ ผู้ชายโรมันหลายคนไม่ต้องการจากครอบครัวและคนอันเป็นที่รักไป และด้วยเหตุผลนี้เอง ทำให้จักรพรรดิคลอดิอุสประกาศให้ยกเลิกงานแต่งงานและงานหมั้นทั้งหมดในกรุงโรม ถึงกระนั้นก็ตาม ยังมีนักบุญผู้ใจดีคนหนึ่งซึ่งชื่อว่า ท่านนักบุญ " วาเลนไทน์ " ท่านเป็นพระที่กรุงโรมในสมัยของจักรพรรดิคลอดิอุสที่สองท่าน นักบุญ วาเลนไทน์ และนักบุญ มาริอุส ได้จัดตั้งกลุ่มองค์กรเล็กๆ เพื่อช่วยเหลือชาวคริสเตียนที่ตกทุกข์ได้ยากเหล่านี้ และได้จัดให้มีการแต่งงานของคู่รักอย่างลับๆด้วย
และจากการกระทำเหล่านี้เอง ทำให้ นักบุญ วาเลนไทน์ ถูกจับและถูกตัดสินประหารโดยการตัดศรีษะ ในวันที่ 14 กุมภาพันธ์ ประมาณปีคริสต์ศักราชที่ 270 ซึ่งถือเป็นวันที่ท่านได้ทนทุกข์ทรมานและเสียสละเพื่อเพื่อนมนุษย์

วันที่ 14 กุมภาพันธ์ ของทุกปีเป็น วันวาเลนไทน์ ซึ่งพวกหนุ่มสาวมักจะรีบไปซื้อบัตรส่งทักทายกันส่งใจถึงกัน นับเป็นความนิยมมากขึ้น ประเพณีนี้เข้ามาสู่ประเทศไทยทีละเล็กละน้อย และดูเหมือนจะเป็นที่นิยมมากขึ้นทุกปี เป็นประเพณีที่หนุ่มสาวนิยมกันมากเป็นพิเศษที่สหรัฐอเมริกาและที่ประเทศอังกฤษ
ทำไมจึงมีชื่อว่า “ วันวาเลนไทน์ ” และความหมายที่แท้จริงของวันนี้คืออะไร? และมาจากไหน?
นักบุญ วาเลนไทน์ (Valentine) เป็นสงฆ์คาทอลิกองค์หนึ่งที่ได้ถูกประหารชีวิตในวันที่ 14 กุมภาพันธ์ คริสตศักราช 270 ในสมัยพระเจ้าจักรพรรดิโรมัน เกลาดิอุส ที่ 2 ( Clanoius) โดยแท้จริงแล้วท่านนักบุญไม่มีส่วนเกี่ยวข้องกับประเพณีการเลือกคู่ หรือหาคู่ หรือหาแฟน หรือความรัก ความสนใจระหว่างหนุ่มสาว ท่านก็ไม่ได้ไปเกี่ยวข้องด้วยเลย ถ้าเช่นนั้นแล้ว ทำไมจึงเลือกนักบุญองค์นี้มาเป็นองค์อุปถัมภ์สำหรับผู้ที่กำลังหาคู่ เลือกคู่หรือเลือกแฟนกันได้เล่า ? เหตุผลที่ค้นพบได้ก็คือ ที่มาของวันวาเลนไทน์ ไม่ขึ้นอยู่กับคนผู้นี้ แต่ขึ้นอยู่กับวันที่ 14 กุมภาพันธ์
