ได้รับบรรพชาเป็นสามเณรรูปแรก นอกจากนี้พระพุทธองค์ยังทรงชี้แนะวัตถุประสงค์ที่แท้จริงของการบรรพชา ทรงกำหนดคุณสมบัติของผู้บรรพชาและทรงวางระเบียบวิธีการบรรพชา ตลอดจนทรงได้บัญญัติสิกขาบทสำหรับสามเณร อีกทั้งในด้านของการบริหารและการปกครองสามเณร ทรงมอบให้เป็นภาระหน้าที่ของพระอุปัชฌาย์อาจารย์และพระภิกษุทั้งหลาย เป็นฝ่ายรับผิดชอบดูแล ในขณะที่บทพุทธบัญญัติต่าง ๆ ที่ทรงอนุญาตให้บังคับใช้กับสามเณรก็ล้วนแต่มีความเหมาะสมกับวัยและวุฒิภาวะ ซึ่งแสดงให้เห็นพุทธมหากรุณาธิคุณที่ทรงมีต่อสามเณรทั้งหลาย

สถานภาพของสามเณรในปัจจุบัน

พบว่า วัตถุประสงค์หลักในการบวชเป็นสามเณรของเยาวชนไทยในยุคปัจจุบันน่าจะมีอีกอย่างน้อย ๕ ประการคือ

๑.เพื่อแก้ไขปัญหาความยากจนและด้อยโอกาสทางการศึกษา

๒.ลดช่องว่างทางสังคมระหว่างคนจนกับคนรวย

๓.ให้มีความรู้แตกฉานในหลักธรรมคำสอนทางพระพุทธศาสนา

๔.เป็นแบบอย่างที่ดีงามให้แก่เยาวชนในชาติ

๕.เป็นกำลังสำคัญของพระศาสนาและชาติบ้านเมืองในอนาคต

ปัญหาความต้องการสถานภาพที่เกิดกับสามเณรในสังคมไทยปัจจุบัน มีสาเหตุหลายประการ ซึ่งอาจสรุปได้ดังนี้

๑.ภิกษุส่วนใหญ่ ยังขาดคุณสมบัติพร้อมที่จะทำหน้าที่เป็นอาจารย์อบรมสั่งสอนสามเณรหรือเป็นผู้สมควร ให้สามเณรอุปัฏฐานเพื่อให้สอดคล้องกับพุทธบัญญัติเช่นเดียวกับในสมัยพุทธกาล ดังนั้น ในบางวัดจึงพบว่า แม้แต่ภิกษุบวชใหม่ก็ยังมีสิทธิใช้ให้สามเณรอุปัฏฐากตนเอง ซึ่งดูแล้วไม่มีความเหมาะสม ซึ่งยังขาดผู้ดูแลแก้ไขในเรื่องนี้อีกด้วย

๒.ภิกษุมีการนับอายุพรรษา เพื่อจัดลำดับความอาวุโส แต่สำหรับสามเณรไม่มีการนับอายุพรรษา แม้จะบวชมาแล้วเป็นเวลาหลายปีก็ตาม ด้วยเหตุนี้ จึงทำให้สามเณรไม่ได้รับความยำเกรงและให้เกียรติจากกลุ่มสามเณรด้วยกันเองและจากภิกษุผู้ยังบวชได้ไม่นาน ยิ่งกว่านั้น ยังเป็นสาเหตุให้สามเณรรูปที่บวชมาหลายปีแล้ว ไม่พยายามประพฤติตนให้ดีขึ้นโดยลำดับ เพื่อเป็นแบบอย่างที่ดีแก่สามเณรรุ่นหลัง ๆ

๓.พระผู้ปกครองที่มีอำนาจ ส่วนใหญ่มักจะทำตนเหินห่างจากสามเณร เพราะถือเป็นค่านิยมเสียแล้วว่า ต้องวางตัวให้น่าเกรงขาม บางรูปมีอุปนิสัยชอบดุด่าว่าตวาด เพื่อวางอำนาจตนให้ดูยิ่งใหญ่ จนเป็นที่หวาดกลัวของสามเณรทั้งหลาย ดังนั้น เมื่อมีปัญหาเกิดขึ้นในกลุ่มสามเณรพระผู้ปกครองเหล่านั้นจึงไม่มีโอกาสได้รับรู้และหาแนวทางแก้ไขได้

การที่ภิกษุไม่ได้ให้เกียรติแก่สามเณร ชาวบ้านก็พลอยไม่ให้เกียรติแก่สามเณรไปด้วย เมื่อชาวบ้านไม่ให้ความเคารพและให้เกียรติแก่สามเณรเท่าที่ควร ก็นำไปสู่การไม่นิยมชมชอบให้เกียรติแก่ภิกษุหนุ่มด้วย ในที่สุดได้กลายเป็นความเหลื่อมล้ำต่ำสูงและไม่เสมอภาคทางศรัทธาของประชาชน จึงไม่แปลกเลยที่พบว่า ประชาชนบางส่วนนิยมทำบุญกับภิกษุผู้สูงอายุมากว่าจะทำบุญกับภิกษุหนุ่มสามเณรน้อย ทั้ง ๆ ที่ท่านเหล่านั้นก็ชื่อว่าเป็นผู้มีศีลและมีศักยภาในการปฏิบัติศาสนกิจเช่นเดียวกัน

สิ่งหนึ่งที่น่าเลื่อมใสและน่าภาคภูมิใจ ก็คือ ไม่ปรากฏเลยว่า มีสามเณรกลุ่มใด จากวัดใด ที่ออกมาประท้วงเพื่อเรียกร้องสิทธิของตน ในฐานะที่ตนก็เป็นส่วนหนึ่งของพุทธบริษัท
