ไบโอดีเซล (Biodiesel) พลังงานทดแทนน้ำมันดีเซล เป็นเชื้อเพลิงที่ได้จากการนำน้ำมันพืช เช่น ปาล์ม ไขมันสัตว์ หรือน้ำมันพืชใช้แล้วมาทำปฏิกิริยาทางเคมีทรานส์เอสเตอริฟิเคชั่นได้เป็นสาร เอสเตอร์ ซึ่งมีคุณสมบัติใกล้เคียงกับน้ำมันดีเซล เมื่อนำมาผสมกับน้ำมันดีเซลเกรดที่ใช้กันปัจจุบันในสัดส่วนร้อยละ 5-10 (B5-B10) สามารถนำมาใช้งานในเครื่องยนต์ดีเซลได้เป็นอย่างดี โดยไม่ต้องดัดแปลงเครื่องยนต์
ประเทศไทยริเริ่มโครงการไบโอดีเซลเมื่อปีพ.ศ.2543 และได้มีการติดตั้งระบบผลิตเอทธิลเอสเตอร์โดยโครงการส่วนพระองค์ สวนจิตรลดา ตั้งแต่ 7 พ.ค.47 และได้มีการพัฒนาโครงการไบโอดีเซลชุมชนที่จ.เชียงใหม่ ปัจจุบัน(มี.ค.49) มีไบโอดีเซล 5% จำหน่ายในสถานีของ ปตท. และบางจากในกทม. และเชียงใหม่(ตามโครงการล้านนาฟ้าใสไบโอดีเซล)ทั้งหมด 15 สถานี
ดีเซลชีวภาพ หรือที่เรียกกันติดปากว่า ไบโอดีเซล (biodiesel) เป็นเชื้อเพลิงดีเซลที่ผลิตจากแหล่งทรัพยากรหมุนเวียนเช่น น้ำมันพืช ไขมันสัตว์หรือสาหร่าย โดยผ่านขบวนการที่ทำให้โมเลกุลเล็กลง ให้อยู่ในรูปของ เอทิลเอสเตอร์ (Ethyl esters) หรือเมทิลเอสเตอร์ (Methyl esters)ซึ่งมีคุณสมบัติใกล้เคียงกับน้ำมันดีเซลมาก สามารถใช้ทดแทนน้ำมันดีเซลได้โดยตรง
