มีเรื่องเล่าไว้ในพระธรรมบทว่าญาติของพระเจ้าพิมพิสารกินของสงฆ์เมื่อตาย
แล้วไป เกิดในนรก ครั้นพระเจ้าพิมพิสารถวายทานแด่พระพุทธเจ้าแล้วมิได้อุทิศ

ุให้ทราบ พระเจ้าพิมพิสารจึงถวายทานอีกแล้วอุทิศส่วนกุศลปไให้ญาติที่ตาย
ไปจึงได้รับส่วน กุศลการทำบุญข้าวประดับดิน ทำเพื่ออุทิศส่วนกุศลแก่ญาติ
ผู้ตายแล้ว ถือเป็นประเพณี ที่ต้องทำเป็นประจำทุกปี
มูลเหตุที่ทำ

อาหารคาวหวาน ที่ใส่ห่อนั้นจะจัดใส่ห่ออย่างละเล็กละน้อย อาทิ
1. ข้าวเหนียวที่นึ่งสุกแล้วปั้นเป็นก้อนเล็กๆ ขนาดเท่าหัวแม่มือ 1 ก้อน
2. เนื้อปลา เนื้อไก่ หมู และใส่ลงไปเล็กน้อย ถือว่าเป็นอาหารคาว
3. กล้วย น้อยหน่า ฝรั่ง มะละกอ มันแกว อ้อย มะละกอสุก หรือขนมหวานอื่นๆ ลงไป (ถือเป็นอาหารหวาน)
4. หมากหนึ่งคำ บุหรี่หนึ่งมวน เมี่ยงหนึ่งคำ
