Joy Williams and John Paul White, the Grammy award-winning pop-country duo formerly known as The Civil Wars, have confirmed they have split up for good.

The pair have been on hiatus since 2012 when they pulled out of a world tour due to "irreconcilable differences".

The duo released two studio albums, won four Grammys and were nominated for a Golden Globe for a song they co-wrote for the first Hunger Games film.

In a statement they said the "difficult decision" had been made "regretfully".

"I am saddened and disappointed by the ending of this duo, to say the very least," said Williams, calling her bandmate "a tremendous musician".

"I will always be grateful for the music we were able to create together," the 31-year-old continued. "I'm so thankful and my heart is full."

"I would like to express sincere thanks to all who were a part of the arc of The Civil Wars, from the beginning to the end and all points in between," said White.

"My deep appreciation goes out to all who supported, disseminated and enjoyed the music.

"Whatever shape or form the next chapter takes, thanks for being a large part of this one."
