งานวิจัยนี้ มีจุดมุ่งหมายที่จะการศึกษานิเวศวิทยาวัฒนธรรมเชิงอนุรักษ์ในผลงานของคำพูน บุญทวี ให้เป็นที่รู้จักในวงวรรณกรรมของไทยให้กว้างขวางยิ่งขึ้น ทั้งนี้ด้วยเห็นว่า ผลงานของคำพูน บุญทวี ถือเป็นผลงานที่อิงแอบในบริบทของสังคมไทยอย่างแยกไม่ออก กล่าวคือ เป็นผลงานที่นำเสนอปัญหาสังคมในหลายๆ ด้าน ทั้งจากคนชนบท โดยเฉพาะคนอีสาน หรือคนภาคอื่นๆ และที่สำคัญผลงานของคำพูน บุญทวี ยังสอดแทรกวัฒนธรรมของชาวอีสานไว้อย่างแยบยล โดยการศึกษาครั้งนี้ มุ่งศึกษาในด้านนิเวศวิทยา และด้านวัฒนธรรมเชิงอนุรักษ์ในผลงานของ คำพูน บุญทวี จำนวน 48 เล่ม ซึ่งแบ่งเป็น รวมเรื่องสั้น จำนวน 13 เล่ม นวนิยาย จำนวน 20 เล่ม และสารคดี จำนวน 15 เล่ม
ผลการวิจับพบว่า ในส่วนของรวมเรื่องสั้น จำนวน 13 เล่ม พบว่า คำพูน บุญทวี มักเสนอภาพชาวอีสานและสังคมร่วมสมัยเป็นหลัก กล่าวคือ ชาวอีสานที่มุ่งหน้าเข้ามาเผชิญโชคในเมืองหลวง อาศัยความอดทนเป็นเกณฑ์ตัดสินเรื่องค่าใช้จ่าย มีความสงบเสงี่ยมเจียมตน ไม่ฟุ้งเฟ้อเห่อตามวัตถุนิยม แต่กระนั้นยังมีชาวอีสานจำนวนไม่น้อยที่ต้องพบชะตาชีวิตให้ดิ้นรนสู่การเป็นอาชญากรอย่างไม่รู้ตัว ในส่วนของนวนิยาย จำนวน 20 เล่ม พบว่า คำพูน บุญทวี มักเสนอภาพคนอีสานไม่แตกต่างกับรวมเรื่องสั้นมากนัก หากแต่ในส่วนของนวนิยายมีรายละเอียดในเรื่องคติความเชื่อดั้งเดิมของชาวอีสาน ตลอดจนขนบธรรมเนียมวิถีชีวิตของชาวอีสานอย่างเป็นกิจจะลักษณะ ดังจะเห็นได้จาก ความเชื่อในความศักดิ์สิทธิ์ของธรรมชาติ พบว่า ชาวอีสานเชื่อในเรื่องสิ่งศักดิ์สิทธิ์และอำนาจเหนือธรรมชาติที่ปรากฏในบทประพันธ์ของคำพูน บุญทวี นั้นคือภาพตัวแทนของชาวอีสาน ในการเชื่อและศรัทธาต่อเรื่องดังกล่าวอย่างแยกไม่ออกกับวิถีชีวิต โดยเฉพาะที่ปรากฏในฉากของทุ่งกุลาร้องไห้นั้น ชาวอีสานตั้งแต่โบราณสืบต่อถึงปัจจุบันถือเป็นเรื่องที่ชวนหวาดกลัวอย่างยิ่ง ทั้งนี้เพราะความเชื่อที่สืบต่อกันมาว่า ในทุ่งกุลาร้องไห้นั้นเดิมทีมีเมืองเก่าตั้งอยู่ก่อน หากแต่ผู้ปกครองไม่ตั้งมั่นในศีลธรรมจรรยา ส่งผลให้เกิดเรื่องร้ายแรงจนถึงขั้นเมืองจมอยู่ใต้น้ำ และในส่วนของสารคดี จำนวน 15 เล่ม พบว่า คำพูน บุญทวี จงใจนำเสนอเรื่องเกี่ยวกับอาหารวิถีชีวิตคนอีสานพลัดถิ่นจำนวนมากที่เข้ามาแสวงโชคในเมืองหลวง เช่น “ฟ้าสั่งให้เกิดมาสู้” “ลูกอีสานต้องปฏิวัติ” “ลูกอีสานพเนจร (เล่ม 1)” “ลูกอีสานพเนจร (เล่ม 2)” หรือการที่คนอีสานออกไปแสวงโชคในต่างประเทศ เช่น เรื่อง “สีเด๋อย่ำเยอรมัน” “ลูกอีสานขี่เรือบิน” “คำพูนกลัวตาย” รวมทั้งยังมีเกร็ดประวัติศาสตร์ของคนอีสาน เช่น “เล่าขานตำนานผีภาคอีสาน” “เกร็ดประวัติศาสตร์อีสาน ผีบ้า ผีบุญ” “ยาคูขี้หอม” “สัตว์และแมลงที่คนอีสานกิน” “ผักพื้นบ้านอีสาน” “ตำนานคนเลี้ยงช้างจากชมพูทวีปถึงคนกุยหรือส่วย” และเรื่อง “คำให้การของคนคุก” “เพชฌฆาตผู้ฆ่าคนไม่ผิดกฎหมาย” โดยสองเรื่องหลังคำพูน บุญทวี ได้ข้อมูลจากตอนที่ตัวเองเป็นผู้คุมนักโทษ
