ตำนานตะเกียงฟักทองนั้น เป็นเรื่องเล่าโบราณเรื่องหนึ่งของไอร์แลนด์ ซึ่งกล่าวถึงที่มาของชายชาวนาจอมเจ้าเล่ห์ชื่อ แจ็ก ในสมัยของเขา ซาตานจะออกตระเวนขอพืชผลจากชาวบ้าน ซึ่งไม่มีบ้านไหนที่กล้าปฏิเสธ เพราะกลัวต้องคำสาปของซาตานนั่นเอง แต่การขู่เข็ญของซาตานใช้กับแจ็กไม่ได้ เขาไม่กลัวและไม่เคยหยิบยื่นอะไรให้ซาตานเลย วันหนึ่งซาตานจึงแอบมาสำแดงตนให้แจ็กเห็น หวังจะให้เขาเปลี่ยนใจหันมาเกรงกลัวซาตาน แต่เหตุการณ์กลับเป็นตรงข้าม แจ็กใช้อุบายหลอกล่อจนซาตานติดกับดัก หนีไปไหนไม่ได้ แจ็กไม่ยอมปล่อยซาตานจนกว่ามันจะรับปากว่า เมื่อเขาตายแล้วจะไม่นำวิญญาณเขาลงนรกเด็ดขาด ซาตานไม่มีทางเลือกจึงต้องรับปาก

ตำนานอื่นมีการเล่าว่า แจ็กเป็นคนขี้เกียจและนิสัยไม่ดี พอไปลงนรกแต่นรกไม่ต้องการตัวจึงส่งกลับมาในโลกให้อยู่ในร่างของฟักทอง
