ประวัติเครื่องพิมพ์ดีดภาษาไทย

เครื่องพิมพ์ดีดภาษาไทยกำเนิดขึ้นในรัชสมัยพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว รัชกาลที่ 5 เมื่อ Mr.Edwin Hunter Macfarland หมอสอนศาสนาชาวอเมริกันที่เกิดในประเทศไทย ซึ่งมีตำแหน่งเป็นเลขานุการส่วนพระองค์ ในสมเด็จกรมพระยาดำรงราชานุภาพ เสนาบดีกระทรวงธรรมการ ได้เกิดความคิดที่จะสร้างเครื่องพิมพ์ดีดภาษาไทยขึ้น พ.ศ.2434 เขาได้เดินทางไปยังสหรัฐอเมริกาเพื่อสำรวจว่าจะมีบริษัทใดที่สนใจผลิตเครื่องพิมพ์ดีดเป็นภาษาไทยบ้าง ซึ่งก็พบว่าบริษัท Smith Premier ในเมือง New York สนใจที่จะร่วมผลิต ดังนั้น Mr.Macfarland จึงได้ร่วมมือกับบริษัท Smith Premier ผลิตต้นแบบเครื่องพิมพ์ดีดภาษาไทยขึ้น โดยได้ร่วมออกแบบและวางตำแหน่งตัวอักษรไทยที่จะใช้ในเครื่องพิมพ์ดีดได้สำเร็จลักษณะเครื่องพิมพ์ดีดไทย Smith Premier นั้น เป็นแบบแคร่ตาย(แคร่พิมพ์ไม่เลื่อน) และมีแป้นพิมพ์ 7 แถว ไม่มีแป้นยกอักษรบน( Shift key) จึงยังไม่สามารถพิมพ์โดยวิธีพิมพ์สัมผัสได้( Touch Typing)

ในปี พ.ศ. 2458 หลังจากที่บริษัท Smith Premier ได้ขายสิทธิการผลิตให้แก่บริษัท Remington แล้ว บริษัท Remington ได้ยกเลิกการผลิตเครื่อง Smith Premier และหันไปผลิตเครื่องแบบยกแคร่ได้แทน แต่ไม่ค่อยได้รับความนิยมจากคนไทยในยุคนั้น

ในปี พ.ศ.2465 Dr.George Macfarland เดินทางไปสหรัฐอเมริกา และได้ร่วมให้คำปรึกษาแก่บริษัท Remington ถึงการผลิตเครื่องพิมพ์ดีดไทยขนาดเล็กที่สามารถพิมพ์สัมผัสสิบนิ้วได้ จนสามารถทำได้สำเร็จเป็นแป้นแบบ 4 แถว และได้นำเครื่องพิมพ์ดีดรุ่นดังกล่าวเข้ามาเผยแพร่ในประเทศไทยจนได้รับความนิยมแทนที่เครื่อง Smith Premier ในเวลาต่อมา แต่ก็ยังมีปัญหาเรื่องการพิมพ์ที่ยังขัดกับวิธีการเขียนภาษาไทยอยู่บ้าง ต่อมา Dr.George Macfarland ได้ร่วมกับพนักงานในห้างของท่าน 2 คน ทำการออกแบบและจัดวางแป้นอักษรเสียใหม่เพื่อแก้ปัญหาที่มีอยู่ โดยมีนายสวัสดิ์ มากประยูร เป็นช่างประดิษฐ์ก้านอักษร และนายสุวรรณประเสริฐ เกษมณี (นายกิมเฮง) เป็นผู้ออกแบบการวางตำแหน่งแป้นอักษร โดยวางตัวอักษรที่มีสถิติใช้บ่อยในตำแหน่งที่พิมพ์ได้ง่าย ซึ่งพิจารณาจากหนังสือต่างๆ จำนวน 38 เล่ม รวม 167 , 456 คำ โดยใช้เวลา 7 ปีจึงสำเร็จเมื่อปี พ.ศ.2474 และเรียกแป้นชนิดนี้ว่าแป้นแบบ ? เกษมณี ? ตามชื่อผู้ออกแบบ จนกลายเป็นแป้นแบบมาตรฐานถึงปัจจุบัน ต่อมานายสฤษดิ์ ปัตตะโชติ ตำแหน่งนายช่างเอก กรมชลประทาน ได้ศึกษาพบว่าแป้นพิมพ์แบบเกษมณียังมีข้อบกพร่อง คือขาดความสมดุลในการวางตำแหน่งแป้นอักษรระหว่างมือซ้ายและขวา เพราะพบว่ามือขวาต้องทำงานถึง 70 % ในขณะที่มือซ้ายทำงานเพียง 30 % เท่านั้น และนิ้วก้อยมือขวาซึ่งเป็นนิ้วที่อ่อนแอกลับต้องทำงานมากกว่านิ้วชี้มือซ้ายซึ่งแข็งแรงกว่า ส่งผลให้การพิมพ์ดีดไม่มีประสิทธิภาพเท่าที่ควร

โดยการสนับสนุนจากสภาวิจัยแห่งชาติ นายสฤษดิ์ ปัตตะโชติ ได้ทำการศึกษาวิจัยเพื่อออกแบบตำแหน่งแป้นอักษรใหม่ที่มีประสิทธิภาพกว่าเดิม โดยการสุ่มเลือกหนังสือหลากหลายสาขารวม 50 เล่ม แต่ละเล่มสุ่มออกมา 1000 ตัวอักษร รวม 50000 ตัวอักษร แล้วสำรวจว่าใน 1000 ตัวอักษรนั้นมีอักษรตัวใดใช้พิมพ์มากน้อยเพียงใดลดหลั่นกันลงมาตามลำดับ แล้วจึงนำตัวอักษรที่เก็บสถิติไว้นี้มาใช้เป็นแนวทางจัดวางแป้นพิมพ์ดีดใหม่ โดยถือหลักว่าอักษรที่ใช้บ่อยให้อยู่ในตำแหน่งนิ้วที่แข็งแรงไม่เกิน 3 แถวล่างตามลำดับโดยมีแถวที่สองเป็นศูนย์กลาง จากการทดลองและปรับปรุงจนในที่สุดก็ได้แป้นภาษาไทยแบบใหม่เรียกชื่อว่าแป้นแบบ ? ปัตตะโชติ ? ตามสกุลของผู้ออกแบบในปี พ.ศ.2509
