พาลา หเว นปฺปสํสนฺติ ทานํ

คนพาลเท่านั้น ย่อมไม่สรรเสริญทาน

บัดนี้ จักได้อธิบายความแห่งกระทู้ธรรมตามกฎเกณฑ์ที่กำหนดไว้เพื่อเป็นแนวทางแห่ง การศึกษา และปฏิบัติธรรมตามสมควรแก่ธรรม สำหรับผู้สนใจใคร่ธรรมทุกท่าน

ทาน หมายถึงการบริจาคสิ่งของของตน คือ อาหาร น้ำดื่ม เสื้อผ้า ผ้าห่ม ที่อยู่อาศัย ยารักษาโรค และของใช้ที่จำเป็นแก่ชีวิต ให้แก่ผู้อื่น ด้วยวัตถุประสงค์ ๒ ประการคือ

๑. เพื่อช่วยเหลือ เพื่ออุดหนุนบุคคลผู้ไม่มีหรือผู้ขาดแคลนสิ่งเหล่านั้น เช่น ผู้ประสบภัย น้ำท่วม ไฟไหม้ เด็กกำพร้า คนชรา เป็นต้น

๒. เพื่อบูชาคุณความดีของผู้ทรงศีล ทรงธรรม ตัวอย่างเช่นพระสงฆ์

อีกอย่างหนึ่ง ทาน หมายถึง การงดเว้นจากการทำบาป ๕ อย่าง

ดังพระพุทธพจน์ว่า อริยสาวกในศาสนานี้เป็นผู้ละปาณาติบาต เว้นขาดจากปาณาติบาต เป็นผู้ละอทินนาทาน เว้นขากจากอทินนาทาน เป็นผู้ละกาเมสุมิจฉาจาร เว้นขาดจากกาเมสุมิจฉาจาร เป็นผู้ละมุสาวาท

เว้นขาดจากมุสาวาท เป็นผู้ละการดื่มสุราและอันเป็นเหตุแห่งความประมาท ชื่อว่า เขาได้ให้ความไม่มีภัย ความไม่มีเวร ความไม่เบียดเบียนแก่สัตว์ทั้งหลายหาประมาณมิ ได้เมื่อเขาให้ความไม่มีภัย ความไม่มีเวร และความไม่เบียดเบียนแก่สัตว์ทั้งหลายหาประมาณมิได้ ตัวเขาเองก็เป็นผู้มีส่วนได้รับความไม่มีภัย ความไม่มีเวร และความไม่เบียดเบียนจากผู้อื่นหาประมาณมิได้เช่นเดียวกัน

ทั้ง ๕ นี้ จัดเป็นทานอันยิ่งใหญ่ เป็นทานที่เลิศกว่าทานทั้งหลาย เป็นวงศ์ของอริยชน เป็นของเก่า อันสมณพราหมณ์ผู้เป็นวิญญูชนไม่คัดค้าน ไม่ลบล้าง

ทานทั้ง ๒ ประการ คือ การให้วัตถุสิ่งของมีอาหารเป็นต้น และการให้อภัยมีการไม่ฆ่า เป็นต้นดังกล่าวมา ช่วยรักษาชีวิตมนุษย์และสัตว์ทั้งหลายให้รอดพ้นจากความตายได้ อุทาหรณ์ที่เห็น ง่ายที่สุดคือ เมื่อมนุษย์เกิดมามารดาบิดาให้น้ำนมดื่มให้ข้าวป้อน ดูแลรักษา และไม่มีคนมาฆ่า เด็กทารกนั้น จึงรอดตายและเจริญเติบโตได้ ตรงกันข้ามถ้ามารดาบิดา หรือผู้อื่นใดไม่ให้น้ำนม ข้าวป้อน ดูแลรักษา หรือมีคนมาฆ่าเด็กทารกนั้นคงไม่รอดตายมาได้ เพราะในเวลานั้นเขายังไม่สามารถจะหาอะไรมารับประทาน ได้เอง และไม่สามารถจะต่อสู้กับใครได้อย่าว่าแต่ต่อสู้กับมนุษย์ตัวโต ๆ เลย สู้กับมดและยุง ก็ไม่ไหวแล้ว

เพราะฉะนั้น ทาน จะในความหมายว่า ให้วัตถุสิ่งของแก่ผู้อื่นหรือให้อภัย คือ ความไม่มีภัย ไม่มีเวรไม่มีเบียดเบียนแก่ผู้อื่นก็ตาม ล้วนมีความสำคัญต่อชีวิตทุกชีวิตเป็นอย่างยิ่ง เพราะช่วยให้มนุษย์ และสัตว์ รอดพ้นจากความตายมาได้ ดังกล่าวแล้ว

ฉะนั้น พระโพธิสัตว์จึงได้กล่าวไว้ในสัตตกนิบาตชาดกในขุททกนิกายว่า ทเทยฺย ปุริโส ทานํ แปลว่า คนควรให้ทาน

แต่ทานทั้ง ๒ ประการนี้ ไม่ใช่จะให้กันได้ง่าย ๆ ทุกคนโดยเฉพาะคนพาล คือ คนที่ชอบทำชั่ว ชอบพูดชั่ว ชอบคิดชั่ว ชอบทำชั่ว คือชอบประพฤติกายทุจริต คือ ฆ่าสัตว์ ลักทรัพย์ ประพฤติผิดในกาม ชอบพูดชั่ว คือ ชอบพูดเท็จ ชอบพูดส่อเสียด ชอบพูดคำหยาบ ชอบพูดคำเพ้อเจ้อ ชอบคิดชั่ว คือ ชอบโลภอยากได้ของผู้อื่น ชอบคิดร้ายต่อผู้อื่น ชอบเห็นผิดเป็นชอบ อย่างที่เรียกว่า เห็นกงจักรเป็นดอกบัว พฤติกรรมทั้งหมดนี้ ล้วนเป็นปฏิปักษ์ คือ ตรงกันข้ามกับคุณธรรมที่เรียกว่า ทานทั้ง ๒ ประการนั้นทั้งสิ้น

การเห็นคุณค่าของทานแล้วบริจาคสิ่งของเพื่อช่วยเหลือผู้ขาดแคลนหรือเพื่อบูชาความดีของผู้ทรงคุณความดีด้วยตนเองและชักชวนบุคคลอื่นให้ปฏิบัติเช่นนั้นก็ดี การให้ความไม่มีภัยแก่ชีวิต ทรัพย์สิน และเกียรติยศชื่อเสียงของผู้อื่นก็ดี ชื่อว่า สรรเสริญทาน พฤติกรรมที่ดีเช่นนี้ จะทำได้ก็แต่คนดีมีศีล มีกัลยาณธรรมเท่านั้น ส่วนคนชั่ว คือ คนพาลนั้น ยากที่จะทำได้ สมกับพระพุทธพจน์ ในธรรมบทขุททกนิกาย ว่า

สาธุ ปาเปน ทุกกรํ

คนชั่ว ทำความดียาก

คนพาลนั้นนอกจากจะไม่ให้ทานและไม่เห็นคุณค่าของทานแล้วยังทำอันตรายต่อทาน เช่นลักขโมย ทรัพย์สินของผู้บริจาคทานทุจริตคดโกงเอาเงินหรือสิ่งของที่ผู้ใจบุญบริจาคช่วยเหลือผู้ประสบภัยมาเป็นของตนเองเสียอีกด้วย ดังได้ฟัง ได้เห็น เป็นข่าวมากมาย

จึงกล่าวโดยสรุปได้ว่า การที่คนพาลไม่ให้ทานไม่เห็นคุณค่าของทานทั้ง ๒ อย่าง คือ วัตถุทาน และอภัยทานขัดขวางผู้บริจาคทาน และทำอันตรายต่อทานด้วยการทุจริตคดโกง ดังกล่าวมา เป็นการกระทำ ที่แสดงออกถึงการไม่สรรเสริญทานตามธรรมภาษิตว่า

พาลา หเว นปฺปสํสนฺติ ทานํ
คนพาลเท่านั้น ย่อมไม่สรรเสริญทาน

๓. สีสะ แปลว่า ยิ่งใหญ่ คือมีความสำคัญ หมายความว่า ถ้าขาดศีลเสียแล้วคุณธรรม หรือความเจริญอย่างอื่นก็เกิดไม่ได้

๔. สีตละ แปลว่า มีความเย็น หมายความว่า ศีลสร้างความเย็นให้แก่จิตใจผู้รักษา และสร้างความร่มเย็นให้แก่สังคม

๕. สิวะ แปลว่า ปลอดภัย หมายความว่า ศีล สร้างความไม่มีภัย ความไม่มีเวร และความไม่เบียดเบียนให้แก่สังคมมนุษย์
