วันพ่อแห่งชาติ ในประเทศไทย

ทั้งนี้ นอกจากวันที่ 5 ธันวาคม จะเป็นวันเฉลิมพระชนมพรรษาของพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวภูมิพลอดุลยเดช และเป็น "วันพ่อแห่งชาติ" แล้ว ยังถือว่าวันนี้เป็น "วันชาติของไทย" อีกด้วย ซึ่งก่อนหน้านี้ประเทศไทยเคยมีการกำหนดวันชาติให้เป็นวันที่ 24 มิถุนายน เพราะเป็นวันเปลี่ยนแปลงการปกครองจากระบอบสมบูรณาญาสิทธิราชย์ มาเป็นการปกครองในระบอบรัฐธรรมนูญที่เป็นประชาธิปไตย โดยได้มีการเฉลิมฉลองวันชาติครั้งแรกในปี พ.ศ. 2482 ในสมัยที่จอมพล ป. พิบูลสงคราม เป็นนายกฯ

ซึ่ง "วันชาติ" ของไทยนั้นอยู่มานานถึง 21 ปี จนวันที่ 21 พฤษภาคม 2503 ในสมัยที่จอมพลสฤษดิ์ ธนะรัชต์ เป็นนายกฯ ก็ได้มีการเปลี่ยนแปลงให้ถือวันพระราชสมภพเป็นวันเฉลิมฉลองของชาติไทย โดยเหตุที่เปลี่ยนเพราะมีข้อไม่เหมาะสมหลายประการ คณะกรรมการจึงมีความเห็นว่าเพื่อให้เป็นไปตามขนบธรรมเนียมประเพณีของประเทศที่มีพระมหากษัตริย์เป็นประมุข และเป็นหลักการสมัครสมานสามัคคีรวมจิตใจของบุคคลในชาติโดยทั่วกัน

จึงควรถือเอาวันพระราชสมภพของพระมหากษัตริย์เป็นวันเฉลิมฉลองของชาติไทย โดยยกเลิกวันชาติ ในวันที่ 24 มิถุนายนเสีย ดังนั้นนับแต่ปี 2503 ประเทศไทยจึงได้ถือเอาวันพระราชสมภพของพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว ซึ่งตรงกับวันที่ 5 ธันวาคม ของทุกปี เป็น "วันชาติ" ของไทย ตั้งแต่นั้นเป็นต้นมา
