สมเด็จพระมหาวีรวงศ์ ทรงมีความปิติยินดีกับความสามัคคีของชาวอุบล ในการสร้างพระธาตุไว้สักการะบูชาอย่างยิ่ง จึงได้อัญเชิญพระบรมสารีริกธาตุจากกรุงเทพมหานคร มารถไฟอุบลราชธานี จนถึงวัดหนองบัว ในวันที่ 20 มีนาคม 2502 โดยผู้ว่าราชการจังหวัดอุบลราชธานี วันที่ 21 มีนาคม 2502 เป็นวันมหามงคลยิ่งของชาวอุบลฯ ที่พระบรมสารีริกธาตุ ได้บรรจุในพระธาตุอย่างสมบูรณ์ โดยสมเด็จพระมหาวีรวงศ์ เป็นผู้อัญเชิญพระบรมสารีริกธาตุขึ้นประดิษฐ์ฐานยังองค์พระบรมธาตุ
