ในปี พ.ศ. 2543 อุทยานประวัติศาสตร์สุโขทัย-ศรีสัชนาลัย-กำแพงเพชร ได้เป็นเจ้าภาพจัดให้ กลุ่มนักเรียนและครูจากทั่วเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้เข้าร่วมการสัมมนา ซึ่งนับได้ว่าเป็นครั้งแรกที่ได้มีการนำการศึกษาเรื่องมรดกโลกไปใช้ในการเรียนการสอนอย่างแท้จริง ในระหว่างการสัมมนา กลุ่มนักเรียนและครูดังกล่าวได้ทดลองใช้คู่มือการศึกษาที่เรียกว่า “มรดกโลกในมือเยาวชน” ที่องค์การ UNESCO จัดทำขึ้น โดยมีผู้เชี่ยวชาญจากกรมศิลปากรและครูในท้องถิ่นทำงานร่วมกันกับกลุ่มครูและนักเรียนที่เข้าร่วมการสัมมนาดังกล่าวด้วย
นายธาราพงศ์ ศรีสุชาติ ผู้อำนวยการสำนักโบราณคดี กรมศิลปากร กล่าวว่า “เมื่อสิ้นสุดการสัมมนา ผมคิดว่าพวกเขามีความเข้าใจอัจฉริยภาพของคนโบราณที่สร้างมรดกโลกแห่งนี้ และกลับออกไปพร้อมกับแนวคิดที่ชัดเจนขึ้นว่า “มรดก” คืออะไร “โบราณคดี” คืออะไร และ “เทคโนโลยีสมัยโบราณ (Ancient Technology) คืออะไร

Dr. Sheldon Shaeffer ผู้อำนวยการองค์การ UNESCO ประจำกรุงเทพฯ กล่าวว่า “ศิลปะ แขนงต่างๆ มีบทบาทที่เด่นชัดและมีเอกลักษณ์ในการนำแนวคิดเรื่องการศึกษาที่มีคุณภาพมาปฏิบัติจริง และในฐานะที่เป็นสื่อในการสร้างสรรค์ ศิลปะยังกระตุ้นการพัฒนากระบวนการการคิดและการเรียนรู้ ก่อให้เกิดความคิดและการสร้างสรรค์ในเชิงนวัตกรรม ตลอดจนชี้ให้เห็นถึงความสำคัญของความหลากหลาย ทางวัฒนธรรม และ สนับสนุนรูปแบบพฤติกรรมที่สร้างการยอมรับพฤติกรรมและความเชื่อทางสังคม ที่แตกต่างจากตนเอง (Social Tolerance)”
ศิลปะทุกสาขาสามารถนำมาใช้ในกระบวนการการเรียนรู้ได้ อาทิ ทัศนศิลป์ ศิลปะงานพลาสติก และ นาฏศิลป์ นอกจากนี้ ครูในเอเชียยังร่วมกันนำนฤมิตศิลป์มาใช้ในการจัดทำวัสดุอุปกรณ์ที่ใช้ในการเรียน- การสอนเกี่ยวกับการศึกษามรดกโลกอีกด้วย
รายงานเรื่องมรดกโลกในมือเยาวชนเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ได้บรรจุแบบกิจกรรมเกี่ยวกับการศึกษา ศิลปะไว้ 7 หน้า ให้ใช้เป็นแนวทางสำหรับกิจกรรมต่างๆ ในชั้นเรียน ทั้งนี้ เพื่อกระตุ้นให้นักเรียนเรียนรู้ ประวัติศาสตร์ดวยการศึกษาและวาดภาพงานแกะสลักบนแผ่นศิลา หรือ ฝึกหัดการทำหัตกรรมโบราณ อาทิ การปั้นหม้อในท้องถิ่น โดยให้เรียนรู้จากช่างฝีมือเก่าๆ และฝึกลงมือทำด้วยตัวเอง 
เมื่อเร็วๆ นี้ ผู้แทนของไทยจากกระทรวงวัฒนธรรม กระทรวงศึกษาธิการ และ กระทรวงทรัพยากร และสิ่งแวดล้อม ก็ได้เข้าร่วมการประชุมระดมสมองที่องค์การ UNESCO จัดให้มีขึ้น เพื่อให้ประเทศไทย นำเอาวิธีการเรียนรู้อย่างสร้างสรรค์นี้ไปใช้ในการศึกษาเกี่ยวกับมรดกโลก โดยในขั้นแรก ผู้เชี่ยวชาญ ของไทยเป็นผู้ระบุความต้องการในการฝึกอบรมครู
