ต่อมาในปีพ.ศ. ๒๔๙๑ คณะสงฆ์ศรีสะเกษซึ่งมีพระชินวงศาจารย์(มหาอิ่ม คณะธรรมยุติ) ซึ่งเป็นเจ้าคณะจังหวัดศรีสะเกษขณะนั้น ดำริจะเปลี่ยนชื่อวัดพระโตหรือวัดป่าแดงเป็น วัดมหาพุทธวิสุทธาราม แต่คณะกรรมการสงฆ์จังหวัด ได้พิจารณาเห็นควรเพียงชื่อว่า วัดมหาพุทธารามจึงได้ชื่อ “วัดมหาพุทธาราม” มาแต่บัดนั้น(ทั้งนี้ตามบันทึกของมหาประยูร วัดมหาพุท- ธาราม)
ในขณะนั้น มีวัดเก่าแก่ที่มีอายุใกล้เคียงกัน รายล้อมวัดมหาพุทธารามอยู่ทุก ๆ ด้าน เหมือนเป็นปราการเฝ้าระวังของนครหลวง อยู่ ๕ วัด คือ
