ค้นพบเมื่อปี พ.ศ.2431 ถิ่นกำเนิดอยู่ตามหุบเขาในเขตพม่าต่อชายแดนไทยตอนเหนือแถบจังหวัดลำพูน และเขตอำเภอเชียงดาว ภาคใต้ เช่น หมู่เกาะอ่างทอง และเกาะช้างในจังหวัดพังงา เป็นต้น ลักษณะเด่นของกล้วยไม้พันธุ์นี้ คือ ใบใหญ่ปลายมน ใบลายสีเขียวแก่และเขียวอ่อนใต้ท้องใบสีม่วงแดง ก้านดอกสั้นมีขน กลีบดอกนอกกว้างมนกลมปลายกลีบคุ้มลงด้านหน้า กลีบในทั้งสองกว้างมนรูปไข่ คุ้มออกด้านหน้า กลีบนอกและกลีบในเกยกันทำให้แลดูลักษณะดอกกลมแน่น กลีบดอกสีขาวนวล ประจุดสีม่วงจากโคนกลีบ กระเปาะมนกลมคล้ายฟองไข่นก Plover (ซึ่งเป็นที่มาของรองเท้านารีฝาหอยที่เรียกว่า “Plover Orchid”)
