อาเซียน คือ สมาคมประชาชาติแห่งเอเชี

อาเซียน คือ สมาคมประชาชาติแห่งเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ (Association of South East AsianNations หรือ ASEAN) โดยการจัดตั้งในครั้งแรกมีจุดประสงค์เพื่อส่งเสริมและร่วมมือในเรื่องสันติภาพ, ความมั่นคง, เศรษฐกิจ, องค์ความรู้, สังคมวัฒนธรรม บนพื้นฐานความเท่าเทียมกันและผลประโยชน์ร่วมกันของประเทศสมาชิก

อาเซียน ได้ก่อตั้งขึ้นโดย ปฏิญญากรุงเทพ (Bangkok Declaration) เมื่อวันที่ 8 สิงหาคม พ.ศ.2510 โดยมีผู้ร่วมก่อตั้ง 5 ประเทศคือ

1.ไทย โดย พันเอก (พิเศษ) ถนัด คอมันตร์ (รัฐมนตรีต่างประเทศ)
2.สิงคโปร์ โดย นายเอส ราชารัตนัม (รัฐมนตรีต่างประเทศ)
3.มาเลเซีย โดย ตุน อับดุล ราชัก บิน ฮุสเซน (รองนายกรัฐมนตรี รัฐมนตรีกลาโหมและรัฐมนตรีกระทรวงพัฒนาการแห่งชาติ)
4.ฟิลิปปินส์ โดย นายนาซิโซ รามอส (รัฐมนตรีต่างประเทศ)
5.อินโดนีเซีย โดย นายอาดัม มาลิก (รัฐมนตรีต่างประเทศ)

ต่อมาได้มีประเทศต่างๆ เข้าร่วมเป็นสมาชิกเพิ่มเติม คือ 8 ม.ค.2527 บรูไนดารุสซาลาม, 28 ก.ค. 2538 เวียดนาม, 23 ก.ค. 2540 สปป.ลาว และ พม่า, 30 เม.ย. 2542 กัมพูชา ทำให้ปัจจุบันมีสมาชิกอาเซียนทั้งหมด 10 ประเทศ

คำขวัญอาเซียน คือ หนึ่งวิสัยทัศน์, หนึ่งอัตลักษณ์, หนึ่งประชาคม (One Vision, One Identity, One Community)
