อำเภอเชียงดาวแบ่งเขตการปกครองย่อยออกเป็น 7 ตำบล 91 หมู่บ้าน ได้แก่ เชียงดาว 16 หมู่บ้าน เมืองคอง 6 หมู่บ้าน เมืองนะ 24 หมู่บ้าน ปิงโค้ง 14 หมู่บ้าน เมืองงาย 11 หมู่บ้าน ทุ่งข้าว พวง 7 หมู่บ้าน และแม่นะ 13 หมู่บ้าน ท้องที่อำเภอเชียงดาวประกอบด้วยองค์กรปกครองส่วนท้องถิ่น 9 แห่ง ได้แก่

- เทศบาลตำบลเชียงดาว ครอบคลุมพื้นที่ บางส่วนของตำบลเชียงดาว

- เทศบาลตำบลเมืองงาย ครอบคลุมพื้นที่บางส่วนของตำบลเมืองงาย

- เทศบาลตำบลเมืองนะ ครอบคลุมพื้นที่ตำบลเมืองนะทั้งตำบล
