จากการสำรวจพืชสมุนไพรที่พบภายในบริเวณโรงเรียนเวียงแก่นวิทยาคมและหมู่ บ้าน หล่ายงาว ระหว่างเดือนมิถุนายน 2550 ถึงเดือน สิงหาคม 2550 พบพืชสมุนไพรทั้งหมด 22 ชนิด โดยจำแนกพืชสมุนไพร ตามลักษณะภายนอกพืชเป็น ไม้ยืนต้น 2 ชนิด ไม้พุ่ม 7 ชนิด ไม้ล้มลุก 10 ชนิดและ ไม้เลื้อยหรือไม้เถา 3 ชนิด จากการศึกษาพืชสมุนไพรที่พบในโรงเรียนและท้องถิ่นมีทั้งหมด 22 ชนิด
