คณะโบราณคดีได้ตั้งขึ้นในวันที่ 12 มิถุนายน พ.ศ. 2498 โดยมีจุดมุ่งหมายหลักให้เป็นคณะวิชาที่ผลิตครูอาจารย์และนักโบราณคดี รวมทั้งเจ้าหน้าที่ที่เกี่ยวข้องกับงานโบราณคดีเพื่อปฏิบัติหน้าที่ในกองโบราณคดี ของกรมศิลปากร หรืองานอื่นๆ ที่เกี่ยวข้องกับโบราณคดี เพื่อเป็นการผลิตบุคลากรที่มีคุณภาพเพื่อดูแล รักษาโบราณสถานและโบราณวัตถุที่มีอยู่ทั่วประเทศไทยให้คงอยู่อย่างยาวนานเพื่อให้คนรุ่นหลังได้ศึกษาต่อไป โดยในส่วนของสาขาโบราณคดีนั้นจะเน้นการขุดค้นโบราณวัตถุเพื่อการศึกษาในเรื่องที่สนใจ ส่วนสาขาประวัติศาสตร์ศิลปะจะเน้นการศึกษารูปแบบการสร้างสถาปัตยกรรม วมถึงภาพเขียนในแต่ละยุคสมัย เพื่อเข้าใจในการสื่อความหมาย รวมถึงอิทธิพลที่ส่งผลต่องานศิลปะนั้นๆ และสาขามานุษยวิทยาเป็นการศึกษามนุษย์เพื่อเข้าใจพฤติกรรมต่างๆที่ส่งผลต่อสังคมและคนรอบข้าง
