ประวัติ / ความเป็นมา
ประเพณีลอยกระทงสาย เป็นประเพณีเฉพาะท้องถิ่นของชาวจังหวัดตาก ซึ่งโดยทั่วไปการลอยกระทงไม่ว่าจะเป็นที่ใดก็จะมีลักษณะที่คล้ายคลึงกัน เช่น ต้องมีกระทงซึ่งประดิษฐ์ขึ้นลักษณะคล้ายดอกบัวบาน แต่ของจังหวัดตากใช้กระทงทำไม่เหมือนใคร คือ ใช้กะลามะพร้าวเป็นตัวกระทง ภายในมีไส้กระทงเป็นมะพร้าวแห้งชุบน้ำมัน สำหรับความเชื่อในการลอยกระทงนั้นก็คล้ายกับชาวไทยในภาคอื่นๆ คือเป็นการสะเดาะเคราะห์และขอขมาพระแม่คงคา แต่ในบางครั้งก็เชื่อว่าเป็นการบูชารอยพระพุทธบาทที่ริมฝั่งแม่น้ำนัมทามหานที อันเป็นคติความเชื่อเหมือนกับภาคกลาง แต่บางทีก็เชื่อว่าเป็นการบูชาพระอุปคุตอรหันต์หรือพระโมคคัลลีบุตรมหาสาวก (ตามอย่างความคิดอิทธิพลของพม่าที่แพร่กระจายอยู่ในดินแดนล้านนา)
