แต่เท่าที่พบในปัจจุบันมี ๘ เรื่อง คือ นิราศเมืองแกลง นิราศพระบาท นิราศภูเขาทอง นิราศวัดเจ้าฟ้า นิราศอิเหนา นิราศสุพรรณ นิราศพระประธม และนิราศเมืองเพชร ส่วน รำพันพิลาป ก็มีเนื้อความรำพึงรำพันทำนองเดียวกับนิราศ เนื้อหาเกี่ยวกับชีวประวัติของท่านสุนทรภู่เป็น ส่วนใหญ่ นอกเหนือจากนี้ ในช่วงเวลาที่ท่านบวชเป็นพระนั้น ท่านได้ธุดงค์ไปทั่ว จึงเชื่อว่ายังมีนิราศ เรื่องอื่นของท่านที่ยังมิได้ค้นพบ หรืออาจไม่มีวันค้นพบก็ได้ เพราะต้นฉบับอาจถูกทำลายไปเสียแล้วเมื่อ ครั้งปลวกขึ้นกุฏิของท่านที่วัดเทพธิดารามรำพันพิลาป

ปี พ.ศ. 2385 พระสุนทรภู่จำพรรษาอยู่ที่วัดเทพธิดาราม ท่านได้ประพันธ์บทกลอนเชิงนิราศเรื่อง "รำพันพิลาป"ขึ้น เนื่องจากเกิดนิมิตฝันอันเป็นลางร้าย ว่าจะต้องถึงแก่ชีวิต ในฝันนั้นท่านว่าได้พบเห็นนางฟ้านางสวรรค์มากมาย รวมถึงนางมณีเมขลา มาชักชวนให้ท่านละชมพูทวีป แล้วไปอยู่สวรรค์ด้วยกัน เรื่องนางสวรรค์นี้ สมเด็จฯ กรมพระยาดำรงราชานุภาพ ทรงมีพระวินิจฉัยว่าน่าจะหมายถึง กรมหมื่นฯ อัปสรสุดาเทพ นัยว่าท่านสุนทรภู่มีจิตพิศวาสอยู่ จะเป็นจริงเช่นไร ท่านผู้อ่านต้องลองอ่านบทกลอนของท่านสุนทรภู่เอง สำหรับข้าพเจ้าเองเห็นว่า น่าจะหมายถึงนางฟ้าจริงๆ มิได้มีความหมายอื่น

ด้วยท่อนหนึ่งในนิราศบทนี้ ท่านยังอ้อนวอนนางมณีเมขลา ว่าให้แก้วแล้ว ขอประโยชน์โพธิญาณถึงพระนิพพานเถิด เช่นเดียวกับที่ท่านได้เคยแสดงความปรารถนาพุทธภูมิไว้ในนิราศหลายๆ เรื่องการเกิดฝันเช่นนี้ เมื่อท่านตื่นขึ้นจึงได้รีบแต่ง "รำพันพิลาป" นี้ขึ้น แสดงความในใจและประวัติชีวิตของท่านในหลายๆ ส่วน รวมถึงประเพณีเทศกาลต่างๆ ที่ได้ประสบพบผ่านมา ซึ่งในส่วนนี้เองทำให้เราทราบว่า ยังมีนิราศของท่านอีกหลายเรื่องที่ท่านแต่งไว้ 12 แต่เรายังไม่มีโอกาสได้อ่าน เพราะปลวกขึ้นกุฏิของท่าน ทำให้ต้นฉบับบทกลอนที่มีค่ายิ่งสูญสลายไปอย่างน่าเสียดาย เว้นเสียแต่จะมีผู้พบต้นฉบับคัดลอกจากที่อื่นเมื่อข้าพเจ้าอ่าน "รำพันพิลาป" จบ
