• ทิศเหนือ ติดต่อกับจังหวัดสุราษฏร์ธานีและอ้าวบ้านดอน
• ทิศใต้ ติดต่อกับอําเภอระโนด จังหวัดสงขลา อําเภอควนขนุน จังหวัดพัทลุง อําเภอห้วยยอดจังหวัดตรัง
• ทิศตะวันออก ติดต่อกับอ่าวไทยเป็นชายฝังทะเล มีความยาวตั้งแต่ตอนเหนือของอําเภอขนอมลงไปทางใต้ของอําเภอหัวไทรประมาณ 225 กิโลเมตร
• ทิศตะวันตก ติดต่อกับจังหวัดสุราษฏร์ธานีและจังหวัดกระบี่

1. บริเวณเทือกเขาตอนกลาง
ได้แก่บริเวณ เทือกเขานครศรีธรรมราช มีอาณาเขตตั้งแต่ตอนเหนือของ จังหวัดลงไป ถึงตอนใต้สุด บริเวณพื้นที่ของอําเภอที่อยู่ในเขตเทือกเขาตอนกลางได้แก่ อําเภอสิชล อําเภอ ขนอม อําเภอท่าศาลา อําเภอเมืองนครศรีธรรมราช อําเภอลานสกา อําเภอพรหมคีรี อําเภอ ร่อนพิบูลย์ อําเภอชะอวด อําเภอจุฬาภรณ์ และอําเภอพระพรหม ในเขตเทือกเขานี้มีภูเขาสูง สุดในจังหวัด คือเขาหลวง ซึ่งสูงประมาณ 1,835 เมตร เหนือระดับน้ำทะเล
นอกจากนี้เทือกเขาดังกล่าวยัง เป็นเส้นแบ่งเขตอําเภอ ระหว่างอําเภอทุ่งสง อําเภอฉวาง กับอําเภอชะอวด อําเภอร่อนพิบูลย์ อําเภอลานสกา อําเภอเมืองนครศรีธรรมราช อําเภอพรหมคีรี อําเภอท่าศาลา และเป็นเส้นแบ่งเขตจังหวัดนครศรีธรรมราช กับอําเภอบ้านนาสาร อําเภอกาญจนดิษฐ์ จังหวัดสุราษฏร์ธานี อีกด้วย
บริเวณเทือก เขาตอนกลาง มีเส้นทางคมนาคมผ่านจากบริเวณที่ราบชายฝั่ง ตะวันออก ไปยังบริเวณที่ราบด้านตะวันตกได้ คือทางหลวงหมายเลข 40 ซึ่งข้ามจากอําเภอสิชล อําเภอ ขนอมสู่เขตอําเภอกาญจนดิษฐ์ จังหวัดสุราษฏร์ธานี และทางหลวง หมายเลข 40 5 จากอําเภอ ลานสกา ไปสู่อําเภอฉวาง ในเขตจังหวัดนครศรีธรรมราช และทางหลวงหมายเลข 4 จาก อําเภอร่อนพิบูลย์ ไปสู่อําเภอทุ่งสง

ได้แก่บริเวณ ตั้งแต่เทือกเขาตอนกลางไปทางตะวันออกถึงฝั่งทะเลอ่าวไทย จําแนกได้ เป็น 2 ตอน คือ ตั้งแต่อําเภอเมืองนครศรีธรรมราชลงไปทางใต้ เป็นที่ราบ ที่มีความกว้างจาก บริเวณเทือกเขาตอนกลางไปถึงชายฝั่งทะเลระยะทางประมาณ 95 กิโลเมตร มีแม่น้ำลําคลอง ที่มีต้นน้ำเกิดจากบริเวณเทือกเขาตอนกลางไหลลงสู่อ่าวไทยหลายสาย นับเป็นที่ราบ ซึ่งมีค่า ทางเศรษฐกิจของจังหวัด ลําน้ำสําคัญ ได้แก่ แม่น้ำปากพนัง และมี คลองสายเล็ก ในเขต อําเภอเมืองนครศรีธรรมราชอีกหลายสาย เช่น คลองปากพญา และคลองท้ายวังเป็นต้น อีก บริเวณหนึ่ง คือตั้งแต่อําเภอท่าศาลาขึ้นไปทางทิศเหนือ เป็นบริเวณฝั่งแคบ ๆ ไม่เกิน 15 กิโลเมตร อําเภอที่อยู่ในเขตที่ราบด้านนี้คือ อําเภอขนอม อําเภอสิชล อําเภอท่าศาลา อําเภอ เมืองนครศรีธรรมราช อําเภอปากพนัง อําเภอเชียรใหญ่ อําเภอหัวไทร และอําเภอชะอวด

3. บริเวณที่ราบด้านตะวันตก
