งานเทศกาลอนุรักษ์เต่าทะเลพังงา เป็นประเพณีที่จัดขึ้นเพื่อรณรงค์ให้ประชาชนเกิดสำนึกรับผิดชอบต่อ เต่า เพื่อนร่วมโลกอีกจำพวกหนึ่งที่กำลังใกล้จะสูญพันธุ์ เพราะน้ำมือมนุษย์

หาดท้ายเหมืองเป็นชายหาดเงียบสงบแห่งหนึ่ง ที่แม่เต่าทะเลชอบขึ้นไปวางไข่ ชาวท้ายเหมืองนิยมตามไปดูธรรมชาติอันน่าพิศวงของเต่า เรียกกันว่าเป็นประเพณีเดินเต่า บ่อยครั้งที่ยังเก็บไข่เต่าไปเป็นอาหาร ต่อมาเมื่อเต่าทะเลลดจำนวนลง และกระแสการอนุรักษ์เต่ได้พุ่งขึ้นสูง จึงมีการจัดงานประเพณีปล่อยเต่าขึ้น เพื่อการขยายพันธุ์เต่าทะเล โดยเริ่มจัดครั้งแรกขึ้นในปี พ.ศ. 2513 จากนั้นจึงจัดงานนี้ต่อเนื่องมาตลอดทุกปี
