ปัจจุบันท่าอากาศยานกลายเป็นปัจจัยสำคัญของระบบการผลิตและการพาณิชย์ระดับโลก และเป็นตัวจักรสำคัญในการพัฒนาเศรษฐกิจระดับท้องถิ่น ระดับภาค จนถึงระดับชาติ นอกจากนี้ท่าอากาศยานยังก่อให้เกิดธุรกิจที่เกี่ยวเนื่องกับกิจกรรมการบินทุกประเภทในพื้นที่โดยรอบท่าอากาศยาน เช่น การผลิตและกระจายสินค้าที่มีความต้องการเร่งด่วน ศูนย์ขายสินค้าทางอินเตอร์เน็ต เป็นต้น

ท่าอากาศยานพาณิชย์ของไทยในปัจจุบันมีทั้งหมด 35 แห่ง ประกอบด้วย ท่าอากาศยานระหว่างประเทศ 6 แห่ง และท่าอากาศยานภายในประเทศ 29 แห่ง เส้นทางการขนส่งสินค้าทางอากาศภายในประเทศส่วนใหญ่จะมีจุดเริ่มต้นและปลายทางอยู่ที่ท่าอากาศยานระหว่างประเทศทั้ง 6 แห่ง

ท่าอากาศยานระหว่างประเทศทั้ง 6 แห่ง ที่เป็นจุดศูนย์รวมของการขนส่งสินค้าทางอากาศทั้งภายในประเทศ และระหว่างประเทศ มีคลังสินค้าสำหรับทำการขนถ่ายสินค้าทางอากาศ อันได้แก่ ท่าอากาศยานสุวรรณภูมิ ท่าอากาศยานดอนเมือง ท่าอากาศยานเชียงใหม่ ท่าอากาศยานเชียงราย ท่าอากาศยานภูเก็ต และท่าอากาศยานหาดใหญ่ ดังรูปที่ 1

โดยท่าอากาศยานที่มีสถิติการขนส่งมากที่สุดในช่วงไตรมาสแรกของปี พ.ศ.2552 คือ ท่าอากาศยานสุวรรณภูมิ ซึ่งมีจำนวนผู้โดยสารที่ใช้บริการถึง 9,444,558 คน และมีการขนส่งสินค้าถึง 214,125 ตัน ทั้งนี้ปริมาณสินค้าผ่านเข้าออกที่ท่าอากาศยานกรุงเทพมีแนวโน้มเพิ่มมากขึ้นทุกปีดังตารางที่ 1
