ประเภทของโครงการแก้มลิง

โครงการแก้มลิงมี ๓ ขนาด คือ

การจัดหาและออกแบบโครงการแก้มลิง

ทั้งนี้โครงการแก้มลิงแบ่งเป็น ๒ ส่วนคือ โครงการระบายน้ำในพื้นที่ฝั่งตะวันออกของแม่น้ำเจ้าพระยา โดยจะใช้คลองที่ตั้งอยู่ชายทะเลด้านจังหวัดสมุทรปราการ ทำหน้าที่เป็นทางเดินของน้ำ ตั้งแต่จังหวัด สระบุรี พระนครศรีอยุธยา ปทุมธานี นนทบุรี และกรุงเทพมหานคร

ส่วนที่สอง คือคลองในพื้นที่ฝั่งตะวันตกของแม่น้ำเจ้าพระยา ซึ่งจะใช้คลองมหาชัย คลองสนามชัย และแม่น้ำท่าจีน ทำหน้าที่เป็นคลองรับน้ำในพื้นที่ตั้งแต่จังหวัดอ่างทอง อยุธยา ปทุมธานี นครปฐม และกรุงเทพมหานคร แล้วระบายลงสู่ทะเลด้านจังหวัดสมุทรสาคร

นอกจากนี้ยังมีโครงการแก้มลิง "แม่น้ำท่าจีนตอนล่าง" เพื่อช่วยระบายน้ำที่ท่วมให้เร็วขึ้น โดยใช้หลักการควบคุมน้ำในแม่น้ำท่าจีน คือ เปิดการระบายน้ำจำนวนมากลงสู่อ่าวไทย เมื่อระดับน้ำทะเลต่ำ ซึ่งโครงการนี้จะประกอบไปด้วย ๓ โครงการในระบบคือ
