ประวัติวันพ่อแห่งชาติ จัดให้มีขึ้นเป็นครั้งแรก เมื่อวันที่ 5 ธันวาคม พ.ศ.2523 โดย คุณหญิงเนื้อทิพย์ เสมรสุต นายกสมาคมผู้อาสาสมัครและช่วยการศึกษา เป็นผู้ริเริ่มจัดงานวันพ่อแห่งชาติขึ้น ด้วยความจงรักภักดี และมีวัตถุประสงค์ เพื่อเทิดพระเกียรติพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว หรือในหลวงของประชาชนชาวไทย ในฐานะ "พ่อแห่งชาติ" และ "พ่อของแผ่นดิน" ในประเทศไทย ได้กำหนดให้ วันที่ 5 ธันวาคม ของทุกปี เป็น วันพ่อแห่งชาติ
ซึ่งนอกจากพระองค์จะเป็นพระราชบิดาของพระราชโอรสและพระราชธิดา ทรงทะนุบำรุงพระราชโอรสธิดาด้วยความรัก และทรงอบรมอนุศาสน์ให้ทรงเจริญวัยสมบูรณ์ และทรงบำเพ็ญคุณานุประโยชน์แก่ประเทศชาติและประชาชน เจริญรอยตามเบื้องพระยุคลบาทแล้ว พระองค์ยังทรงพระมหากรุณาทะนุบำรุงจัดทุกข์ผดุงสุขพสกนิกรถ้วนหน้า พระองค์ทรงเป็น “พ่อแห่งชาติ” ที่อาณาประชาราษฎร์เทิดทูนด้วยความจงรักภักดี สำนักในพระมหากรุณาธิคุณ และยึดมั่นในการเจริญรอยตามเบื้องพระยุคลบาทในการทะนุบำรุงชาติบ้านเมืองให้ วัฒนาถาวรสืบไป
วันพ่อแห่งชาติ
วัตถุประสงค์ของการจัดงานวันพ่อแห่งชาติ ที่คณะผู้ริเริ่มกำหนดคือ
• เพื่อเทิดทูนพระเกียรติคุณของ พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว
• เพื่อเทิดทูนพระคุณของพ่อ และยกย่องบทบาทของพ่อที่มีต่อครอบครัวและสังคม
• เพื่อให้ลูกได้แสดงความกตัญญูกตเวทีต่อพ่อ
• เพื่อให้ผู้เป็นพ่อ สำนึกในหน้าที่และความรับผิดชอบของตน

ในการนี้คณะกรรมการได้จัดกิจกรรมประกาศเกียรติคุณ พ่อตัวอย่าง หรือพ่อดีเด่น ในทุกๆปี โดยมีการกำหนดคุณสมบัติของพ่อดีเด่นดังนี้
คุณสมบัติของพ่อตัวอย่าง หรือพ่อดีเด่น
• มีอายุตั้งแต่ 40 ปีขึ้นไป
• ส่งเสริมการศึกษาของบุตรธิดา
• นับถือศาสนาโดยเคร่งครัด

• อุทิศตนเพื่อประโยชน์ต่อสาธารณชนและส่วนรวม
• มีภรรยาเพียงคนเดียว
นอกจากนั้นทางคณะกรรมการ ยังได้แนะนำ กิจกรรมสำหรับลูกในวันพ่อ คือ
• ประดับธงชาติตามอาคารบ้านเรือน
• จัดกิจกรรมบำเพ็ญประโยชน์ต่อสาธารณะ หรือบำเพ็ญกุศลเพื่อส่วนรวม
• ทำบุญใส่บาตร เพื่ออุทิศส่วนกุศล และระลึกถึงพระคุณของพ่อ ซึ่งยังดำเนินการสืบเนื่องมาจนถึงปัจจุบัน

ในวัน ที่ 5 ธันวาคมมหาราช นอกจากจะเป็นวันเฉลิมพระชนมพรรษาของพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวภูมิพลอดุลย เดช และเป็นวันพ่อแห่งชาติแล้ว ยังถือว่าว่าวันนี้ เป็น “วันชาติของไทย” อีกด้วย

โดยทั่วไป “วันชาติ” มักจะหมายถึง วันเฉลิมฉลองที่ประเทศนั้นๆได้รับอิสรภาพ เป็นเอกราช หรือเป็นวันสถาปนาประเทศ รัฐ ราชวงศ์ วันพระราชสมภพของพระมหากษัตริย์ วันเกิดประมุขของรัฐ หรืออาจจะเป็นวันที่มีความสำคัญทางประวัติศาสตร์อื่นๆ แต่มักจะถือเป็นวันหยุดประจำของชาติ ซึ่ง “วันชาติ” ของแต่ละประเทศจะเป็นวันใด ก็ขึ้นอยู่กับการกำหนดของประเทศนั้นๆ เช่น ประเทศโมร็อกโก ตรงกับวันที่ ๒ มีนาคม สหรัฐอเมริกา ตรงกับวันที่ 4 กรกฎาคม ฝรั่งเศสตรงกับวันที่ 14 กรกฎาคม อินโดนีเซียตรงกับวันที่ 17 สิงหาคม บราซิลตรงกับวันที่ 7 กันยายน และเคนย่าตรงกับวันที่ 12 ธันวาคม เป็นต้น

“วันชาติ” ของประเทศต่างๆ ส่วนใหญ่จะมีเพียงวันเดียว แต่ก็มีบางประเทศเช่นกันที่มี “วันชาติ” มากกว่าหนึ่งวัน ทั้งนี้เพราะประเทศนั้นๆ อาจจะนับวันที่ได้รับเอกราชหรือวันที่ปลดแอกจากการเป็นอาณานิคม และวันที่มีการสถาปนาการปกครองขึ้นใหม่ ซึ่งอาจจะมิใช่วันเดียวกัน แต่เป็นวันสำคัญเสมือนวันชาติเท่าๆกัน เช่น ประเทศปากีสถาน จะมีวันชาติตรงกับวันที่ 23 มีนาคม ที่เขาเรียกว่า “Republic Day” และวันที่ 14 สิงหาคม เป็น “Independence Day” ส่วนฮังการี ก็มีถึง 3 วันคือ วันที่ 15 มีนาคม 20 สิงหาคม และ 23 ตุลาคม สำหรับจีน นอกจากจะมีวันชาติตรงกับวันที่ 1 ตุลาคม แล้ว ที่ฮ่องกง อันเป็นเขตปกครองพิเศษของจีน ที่มีขึ้นหลังจากอังกฤษคืนเกาะฮ่องกงให้จีนก็มีการเฉลิมฉลองวันที่ตรงกับวัน สถาปนาการปกครองพิเศษนี้ขึ้น ในวันที่ 1 กรกฎาคม อีกด้วย

คณะกรรมการนี้ได้พิจารณาแล้ว เสนอความเห็นว่า ประเทศต่างๆได้เลือกถือวันใดวันหนึ่งที่มีความสำคัญเกี่ยวเนื่องกับชนในชาติ ต่างๆกัน โดยถือเอาวันประกาศเอกราช วันอิสรภาพ วันตั้งถิ่นฐาน วันสาธารณรัฐ วันสถาปนาพระราชวงศ์บ้าง ซึ่งไม่เหมือนกัน แต่ประเทศที่มีพระมหากษัตริย์เป็นประมุขของชาติ โดยทั่วไปนั้น ได้ถือเอาวันพระราชสมภพของพระมหากษัตริย์เป็นวันเฉลิมฉลองของชาติ เช่น ประเทศอังกฤษ เนเธอร์แลนด์ เดนมาร์ก สวีเดน ญี่ปุ่น ฯลฯ เป็นต้น แม้ประเทศไทยเราเองก็ได้ถือเอาวันพระราชสมภพเป็นวันเฉลิมฉลองของชาติไทยมา แล้ว เพิ่งจะมากำหนดเอาวันที่ 24 มิถุนายน เป็นวันชาติ เพิ่มขึ้นอีกวันหนึ่งในระยะหลังนี้เอง
