คนเชียงใหม่นิยมเรียกแม่น้ำว่า “น้ำแม่” โดยมีแม่น้ำสำคัญอยู่หลายสาย เช่น
แม่น้ำปิง มีความยาวตลอดสาย 600 กม.
แม่น้ำกก มีความยาวตลอดสาย 180 กม.
แม่น้ำแจ่ม มีความยาวตลอดสาย 170 กม.
แม่น้ำแม่ตื่น มีความยาวตลอดสาย 150 กม.
แม่น้ำแม่แตง มีความยาวตลอดสาย 135 กม.
แม่น้ำแม่งัด มีความยาวตลอดสาย 100 กม.

แบ่งออกเป็นสามฤดู
ฤดูฝน - เดือนมิ.ย.-ต.ค. มีฝนตกชุก เนื่องจากมีสภาพเป็นภูเขาสูง และมีป่าต้นน้ำจำนวนมาก ทำให้ความชุ่มชื้นในอากาศสูง โดยเฉพาะบนยอดดอยมีฝนตกเกือบทุกวัน
ฤดูหนาว - เดือน พ.ย.-ก.พ. อากาศไม่หนาวจัดมาก ท้องฟ้าแจ่มใสมีแดดตลอดวัน มีหมอกลงบ้างในตอนเช้า เป็นฤดูที่นักท่องเที่ยวนิยมไปเที่ยวกันมาก อุณหภูมิต่ำสุดโดยเฉลี่ยประมาณ 14 องศาเซลเซียส แต่ถ้าบนยอดดอยอาจต่ำลงถึง 4 องศาเซลเซียส
ฤดูร้อน - เดือน มี.ค.-พ.ค. อากาศจะร้อนมากในช่วงกลางวันเนื่องจากสภาพเป็นแอ่งกระทะ ในช่วงกลางคืนอากาศจะเย็นลง อุณหภูมิสูงสุดเฉลี่ยประมาณ 30 องศาเซลเซียส
