รศ. ดร. นพ.พงศ์เทพ วิวรรธนะเดช ผอ.ศูนย์วิจัยและจัดการคุณภาพอากาศ มหาวิทยาลัยเชียงใหม่ กล่าวถึงปัญหามลพิษทางอากาศในภาคเหนือมีหลายปัจจัย ทั้งการจราจรในเขตเมือง ทำให้มีการเผาไหม้ของน้ำมันเชื้อเพลิงเพิ่มมากขึ้นโดยเฉพาะในช่วงเร่งด่วน อุตสาหกรรมทั้งขนาดเล็กและขนาดใหญ่ที่มีการใช้เชื้อเพลิงไม่สะอาด อาทิ อิฐ แกลบ รวมถึงการใช้ซัลเฟอร์ไดออกไซด์อบลำไย การเผาในที่โล่ง ไม่ว่าจะเป็นขยะ ป่า และการเกษตร

ทั้งนี้ ตัวการสำคัญที่ทำให้เกิดปัญหาหมอกควันมากที่สุด คือ การทำไร่ข้าวโพด โดยเฉพาะในเขตอำเภอแม่แจ่มและอมก๋อย ตั้งแต่เริ่มปลูกจนถึงเผาตอซังรวม 3 ครั้งต่อปี

ปัจจัยเหล่านี้ทำให้เกิดการสะสมสารพิษในร่างกายตลอดทั้งปี ส่งผลกระทบต่อสุขภาพของประชาชน ทำให้มีจำนวนผู้ป่วยมะเร็งปอดและหอบหืดเพิ่มขึ้น โดยเฉพาะช่วงที่มีหมอกควันหนาแน่นในเดือนมกราคม-มีนาคม จะมีอัตราการเสียชีวิตมากขึ้น
