The trend to home school has been becoming more prevalent
and research addressing beliefs held and practices practices
carried out by home schooling families has been very limited.
This study investigated beliefs and practices of home
schooling families with respect to the development of emergent
literacy among young children in the home school. Two forms
of survey research methodology were employed in the study,
specifically, questionnaire and interview/direct observation.
Research questions for both forms focused upon the following:
reasons for choosing to home school; future plans for home
schooling; curriculum, materials, and instructional strategies
employed; and practices used to develop literacy among young
children.
