สัตว์นครราชสีมา หรือ สวนสัตว์โคราช ในองค์การสวนสัตว์ในพระบรมราชูปถัมป์ สังกัด กระทรวงทรัพยากรธรรมชาติและสิ่งแวดล้อม จัดตั้งขึ้นตามมติคณะรัฐมนตรี มื่อวันที่ 23 พฤษาคม 2532 ในสมัย พลเอกชาติชาย ชุณหะวัณ เป็นนายกรัฐมนตรีภายใต้ ชื่อโครงการ "สวนสัตว์นครราชสีมา" จนกระทั่งมีพิธีเปิดอย่างเป็นทางการ เมื่อวันที่ 14 ธันวาคม 2539 โดยมีพลเอก เปรม ติณสูลานนท์ ประธานองคมนตรีและรัฐบุรุษ เป็นประธานในพิธี และใช้ชื่อว่า "สวนสัตว์นครราชสีมา" เป็นต้นมา สวนสัตว์นครราชสีมาจัดเป็นสถานที่ พักผ่อนเชิงนิเวศของประชาชน เป็นแหล่งเรียนรู้เรื่องสัตว์ป่าและธรรมชาติศึกษา ของเยาวชนที่มีความทันสมัย ตามมาตรฐานการจัดการสวนสัตว์ให้มีคุณภาพระดับสากล
