นายเกรียงไกร สัมปัชชลิต อธิบดีกรมศิลปากร เปิดเผยว่า เมื่อเร็ว ๆ นี้ ตนได้จัดประชุมเรื่องการขอเศษโบราณวัตถุไปวิจัยในต่างประเทศ ซึ่งเป็นโครงการที่ทำมาอย่างต่อเนื่องเพื่อประโยชน์ในการสืบค้นองค์ความรู้ทางประวัติศาสตร์ โดยในปี 2553 ได้อนุมัติส่งมอบเศษโบราณวัตถุทั้งชิ้นใหญ่และเล็ก ให้ 12 ประเทศ โดยมีการวางกรอบและกฎเกณฑ์ในการอนุมัติต่างกันไป อย่างไรก็ตามประเด็นสำคัญในการส่งมอบโบราณวัตถุดังกล่าวจะคำนึงถึงประโยชน์ที่ประเทศไทยจะได้รับเป็นสำคัญ โดยเฉพาะความสามารถในการสืบค้นข้อมูลจากโบราณวัตถุยุคก่อนประวัติศาสตร์ที่เรายังขาดศักยภาพในการวิจัยและสืบค้น
