พระตำหนักดอยตุงเริ่มดำเนินการก่อสร้างเมื่อวันที่ 26 ธันวาคม 2530 เมื่อสมเด็จพระศรีนครินทราบรมราชชนนี มี พระชนมายุ 88 พรรษา
เป็นที่ประทับแปรพระราชฐานเพื่อทรงงานของสมเด็จย่า ปลูกแบบง่ายๆ ด้วยพระราชทรัพย์ส่วนพระองค์ พระตำหนักสร้างด้วยไม้ทั้งหลัง รูปแบบการสร้างเป็นการผสมผสานสถาปัตยกรรมล้านนากับบ้านพื้นเมืองสวิตเซอร์แลนด์ ที่เพดานห้องโถงทำเป็นเพดานดาว บริเวณด้านหลังพระตำหนักมีระเบียงยืนออกไป เมื่อยืนที่ระเบียงจะเห็นทัศนียภาพของดอยตุงที่สวยงาม บริเวณขอบระเบียงมีกระบะปลูกไม้ดอกที่มีสีสันสวยงาม
