อำเภอแก่งคอยก่อตั้งขึ้นเมื่อปีพุทธศ

อำเภอแก่งคอยก่อตั้งขึ้นเมื่อปีพุทธศักราช 2370 ในขณะนั้นยังใช้ชื่อเรียกหน่วยงาน กรมการปกครองระดับอำเภอ " แขวง " อยู่โดยมีหลวงพลกรมการเป็นผู้ปกครองแขวงคนแรก และที่มีทำการแขวงอยู่ที่บ้านตาลเดี่ยว
พุทธศักราช 2440 มีการตรวจพระราชบัญญัติลักษณะปกครองท้องที่ ร.ศ.116 ขึ้นกำหนดรูปการปกครองใหม่ โดยเปลี่ยนนามเรียกขานจาก
" แขวง" เป็น " อำเภอ" และให้มีการปกครองระดับตำบล หมู่บ้าน เป็นหน่วยงานการปกครองระดับรองลงไป
ภายหลังที่ใช้ชื่อหน่วยงานการปกครองว่า " อำเภอ" ได้มีการย้ายที่ทำการ รวม 2 ครั้ง คือ พุทธศักราช 2458 ย้ายที่ว่าการอำเภอจากริมแควป่าสัก มาสร้างขึ้นที่ ริมทางรถไฟสายตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือตรงด้านทิศตะวันตกของสถานีรถไฟแก่งคอย ต่อมาพุทธศักราช 2497 ทางราชการได้เวนคืนที่ดินอำเภอให้แก่ การรถไฟแห่งประเทศไทยแปลงใหม่ 1 ครั้ง ในพุทธศักราช 2505 โดยสร้างตามแบบที่ว่าการอำเภอชั้นตรี ( ไม้สองชั้น) ของกรมโยธาธิการเลขที่ 6186 ใช้งบประมาณทั้งสิ้น 300,000 บาท (สามแสนบาทถ้วน) อาคารนี้แล้วเสร็จในปีพุทธศักราช 2506 และ ฯพณฯ พลเอกประภาส จารุเสถียร รัฐมนตรีว่าการกระทรวงมหาดไทย ขณะนั้น ได้มาเป็นประธานในพิธีเปิดป้ายอาคารในวันที่ 10 เมษายน 2507 อาคารดังกล่าวได้ใช้เป็นที่ทำการอำเภอเรื่อยมาจนถึงปีพุทธศักราช 2535 จึงได้มีการรื้ออาคารและก่อสร้างใหม่ตามแบบมาตรฐานเป็นอาคารคอนกรีต 2 ชั้น แล้วเสร็จในเดือนตุลาคม 2535 ซึ่งเป็นอาคารที่ว่าการอำเภอในปัจจุบัน เมืองแก่งคอยได้รับการยกฐานะตามพระราชกฤษฎีกาจัดตั้งเทศบาลตำบลแก่งคอย จังหวัดสระบุรี พุทธศักราช 2487 ตามประกาศประธานสภาผู้แทนราษฎรลงวันที่ 1 สิงหาคม พุทธศักราช 2487 ตราไว้ ณ วันที่ 19 ธันวาคม พุทธศักราช 2487 และประกาศดังกล่าวลงในราชกิจจานุเบกษา เล่ม 61 ตอนที่ 77 ลงวันที่ 26 ธันวาคม พุทธศักราช 2487 และได้รับการเปลี่ยนแปลงฐานะเป็นเทศบาลเมืองแก่งคอยตามประกาศกระทรวงมหาดไทย ลงวันที่ 26 ธันวาคม 2550 เรื่อง เปลี่ยนแปลงฐานะเทศบาลตำบลแก่งคอย อำเภอแก่งคอย จังหวัดสระบุรี เป็นเทศบาลเมืองแก่งคอย ทั้งนี้ ตั้งแต่วันที่ 1 กุมภาพันธ์ 2551
