ประวัติ
พระยาเฉลิมอากาศ มีนามเดิมว่า สุณี สุวรรณประทีป เกิดเมื่อวันที่ ๒๖ เมษายน พ.ศ. ๒๔๓๐ ที่อำเภอศรีประจันต์ จังหวัดสุพรรณบุรี เข้ามาศึกษาต่อที่โรงเรียนวัดจักรวรรดิราชาวาส โรงเรียนวัดมหาพฤฒาราม และโรงเรียนสวนกุหลาบวิทยาลัย จากนั้นเข้าศึกษาต่อที่โรงเรียนนายร้อยทหารบก ได้คะแนนดีเยี่ยม จากนั้นเข้ารับราชการทหาร

ท่านได้รับทุนไปศึกษาวิชาการบินที่ประเทศฝรั่งเศส ขณะมียศเป็น นายพันตรี หลวงศักดิ์ศัลยาวุธ เป็นนักบินรุ่นแรก คนหนึ่งในจำนวน ๓ คน ซึ่งประกอบด้วย นายร้อยเอก หลวงอาวุธสิขิกร (หลง สินศุข) (ต่อมาเป็น นาวาอากาศเอก พระยาเวหาสยานศิลปสิทธิ์) และนายร้อยโท ทิพย์ เกตุทัต (ต่อมาเป็น นาวาอากาศเอก พระยาทะยานพิฆาต)
