การแข่งเรือยาวเป็นประเพณีอย่างหนึ่งซึ่งจัดขึ้นในช่วงสิ้นสุดฤดูกาลเข้าพรรษา โดยปกติแล้วจะมีขึ้นในเดือน 11 หรือ 12 (ประมาณเดือนกันยายนหรือตุลาคม) เมื่อระดับน้ำขึ้นสูงสุด ณ เวลานี้ การแข่งขันจะจัดขึ้นเกือบทั่วทั้งประเทศ โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่งในจังหวัดพิจิตร พิษณุโลก น่าน อ่างทอง ปทุมธานี สุราษฎร์ธานีและอยุธยา เป็นต้น
ตามประเพณีแล้ว การแข่งเรือยาวจะจัดขึ้นเป็นงานประจำปี โดยจังหวัดซึ่งมีทางน้ำใหญ่ไหลผ่านไม่ได้จำกัดอยู่แต่เฉพาะภาคใดภาคหนึ่ง ปัจจุบันนี้ การแข่งเรือยาวถือเป็นกีฬาประจำชาติ ประวัติการแข่งขันเรือยาวนี้ย้อนกลับไปในยุคกรุงศรีอยุธยาประมาณ 600 ปีมาแล้ว แต่ว่าการแข่งเรือในสมัยนั้นเป็นเพียงเพื่อให้นักพายเรือมีความพร้อมทั้งทางด้านกายและจิตใจเพื่อการป้องกันประเทศ
โดยปกติเรือแข่งนี้จะทำจากลำต้นไม้ขุดและสามารถบรรจุฝีพายได้ถึง 60 คนนั่งคู่กันสองแถว ตามปกติแล้ว ฝีพายจะแต่งกายด้วยเสื้อผ้าสีเดียวกัน ประเพณีนี้จะดึงดูดคนดูทั้งชาวไทยและชาวต่างประเทศหลายร้อยคนผู้ซึ่งจะนั่งดูการแข่งขันบนฝั่งแม่น้ำสองฝั่งอย่างกระตือรือล้น เมื่อสิ้นสุดการแข่งขันก็จะมีการแจกถ้วยและรางวัลให้แก่ทีมที่ชนะด้วย
