ประเพณีอุ้มพระดำน้ำ เป็นประเพณีท้องถิ่นของชาวจังหวัดเพชรบูรณ์ซึ่งจะจัดขึ้นในช่วงเทศกาลสารทไทย ตรงกับวันแรม 15 ค่ำ เดือน 10 ประเพณีนี้เป็นประเพณีอันศักดิ์สิทธิ์ และมีเพียงแห่งเดียวในประเทศไทยโดยชาวเพชรบูรณ์มีความเชื่อว่าเมื่อทำพิธีอุ้มพระดำน้ำแล้วจะทำให้ฝนตกตามฤดูกาล และทำให้ประชาชนและบ้านเมืองมีความสุขความเจริญ









ตำนานของประเพณีนี้เล่าไว้ว่า แต่เดิมที่มีชาวประมงที่ออกหาปลาในแม่น้ำป่าสักแต่อยู่มาวันหนึ่งชาวประมงไม่สามารถจับปลาได้แม้แต่ตัวเดียวจนกระทั่งเกิดเหตุการณ์ประหลาดขึ้นเมื่อ ท่ามกลางน้ำที่กำลังไหลเชี่ยวกับหยุดนิ่ง พรายน้ำผุดขึ้นจนกลายเป็นวังน้ำวนขนาดใหญ่ และมีพระพุทธรูปองค์หนึ่งลอยขึ้นเหนือน้ำและมีอาการคล้ายกำลังดำผุดดำว่ายอยู่ชาวประมงจึงลงไปอัญเชิญพระพุทธรูปมาประดิษฐานเพื่อสักการะบูชาหลังจากนั้นในปีถัดมาซึ่งตรงกับวันสารท วันแรม 15 ค่ำ เดือน 10 พระพุทธรูปดังกล่าวได้หายไป ชาวบ้านช่วยกันค้นหาปรากฏว่า พบพระพุทธรูปอยู่กลางแม่น้ำและกำลังอยู่ในอาการดำผุดดำว่ายเหมือนครั้งแรกจึงอัญเชิญขึ้นมาประดิษฐานที่วัดไตรภูมิและได้ถวายนามว่า “พระพุทธมหาธรรมราชา” ดังนั้น เจ้าเมืองจึงต้องอัญเชิญพระพุทธมหาธรรมราชาไปประกอบพิธีอุ้มพระดำน้ำทุกปีจนกลายเป็นประเพณีสืบเนื่องมาจนถึงปัจจุบัน
ในการประกอบพิธี ผู้ว่าราชการจังหวัดจะทำพิธีบวงสรวงเทพยดาในช่วงเช้า ตอนบ่ายจะเป็นการแห่พระพุทธมหาธรรมราชาโดยอัญเชิญประดิษฐานบนบุษบกและแห่ไปตามถนน ซึ่งก็จะมีการตกแต่งขบวนอย่างสวยงาม วันต่อมาในช่วงเช้าผู้ว่าราชการจังหวัดขะอัญเชิญพระพุทธมหาธรรมราชาแห่ไปตามแม่น้ำป่าสัก เพื่อทำพิธีอุ้มพระดำน้ำ กลางแม่น้ำบริเวณวัดโบสถ์ชนะมาร ที่เป็นสถานที่พบพระพุทธรูปในครั้งแรก เมื่อดำน้ำเสร็จชาวบ้านจะตักน้ำรดศีรษะและรดกันเองเพื่อความเป็นสิริมงคล
