วันพ่อแห่งชาติ ได้จัดให้มีขึ้นครั้งแรก เมื่อวันที่ 5 ธันวาคม พ.ศ. 2523 โดยคุณหญิงเนื้อทิพย์ เสมรสุต นายกสมาคมผู้อาสาสมัครและช่วยการศึกษาเป็นผู้ริเริ่ม หลักการและเหตุผลที่มีการจัดตั้งวันพ่อ เนื่องจากพ่อ เป็นบุคคลผู้มีพระคุณและมีบทบาทสำคัญต่อครอบครัวและสังคม สมควรที่ผู้เป็นลูกจะเคารพเทิดทูนและตอบ แทนพระคุณด้วยความกตัญญู และสังคมควรที่จะยกย่องให้เกียรติรำลึกถึงผู้เป็นพ่อ จึงถือเอาวันที่ 5 ธันวาคม ของทุกปี ซึ่งเป็นวันเฉลิมพระชนมพรรษาเป็น 'วันพ่อแห่งชาติ' ด้วย พระมหากรุณาธิคุณของพระบาทสมเด็จ พระเจ้าอยู่หัวที่ทรงมีต่อพสกนิกรชาวไทยอย่างนานัปการ อีกทั้งยังทรงเป็นพระราชบิดาของพระราชโอรสและ พระราชธิดาที่ทรงรักใคร่ห่วงใย ตั้งแต่พระเยาว์จนถึงปัจจุบัน และพระเจ้าหลานเธอทุก ๆ พระองค์ต่างซาบซึ้ง ในพระมหากรุณาธิคุณอย่างมิรู้ลืม พระองค์ทรงเป็น 'พ่อ' ตัวอย่างของปวงชนชาวไทยที่เปี่ยมล้นด้วยพระ เมตตากรุณา ทรงห่วงใยอย่างหาที่เปรียบมิได้

พระราชประวัติ

พระบาทสมเด็จพระปรมินทรมหาภูมิพลอดุลยเดช เป็นพระโอรสองค์เล็กในสมเด็จเจ้าฟ้ามหิดลอดุลยเดช กรมหลวงสงขลานครินทร์ และพระบาทสมเด็จพระศรีนครินทราบรมราชชนนี ทรงเสด็จพระราชสมภพ ณ โรงพยาบาลเมานท์ ออร์เบินณ์ เมืองเคมบริดจ์ รัฐแมสสาชูเซสท์ ประเทศสหรัฐอเมริกา เมื่อวันที่ 5 ธันวาคม พ.ศ. 2475 พระองค์ทรงมีพระเชษฐาธิราช (พี่ชาย) และพระเชษฐภคินี (พี่สาว) 2 พระองค์คือ 1. สมเด็จพระเจ้าพี่นางเธอ เจ้าฟ้ากัลยาณิวัฒนา กรมหลวงนราธิวาสราชนครินทร์ 2. พระบาทสมเด็จพระปรเมนทรมหาอานันทมหิดล (รัชกาลที่ 8)

พระบาทสมเด็จพระปรมินทรมหาภูมิพลอดุลยเดช

ทรงขึ้นครองราชเป็นพระมหากษัตริย์รัชกาลที่ 9 แห่ง กรุงรัตนโกสินทร์ ได้ทรงราชาภิเษกสมรสกับหม่อมราชวงค์สิกิติ์ กิติยากร (สมเด็จพระนางเจ้าสิริกิติ์พระบรมราชินีนารถ) ทรงมีพระราชโอรสและพระราชธิดารวม 4 พระองค์ คือ

พระราชกรณียกิจของพระองค์


พระ บาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวทรงเสด็จเยี่ยมราษฎรทั่วทุกภาคตลอดปี โดยได้เสด็จประทับแรมที่พระตำหนัก ตามภาคต่าง ๆ เพื่อจะได้ทอดพระเนตรเห็นสภาพความเป็นอยู่ที่แท้จริงของประชาชน และหาทางแก้ไขต่าง ๆ เพื่อให้ประชาชนมีความเป็นอยู่ที่ดีขึ้น จึงทำให้เกิดโครงการ เช่น โครงการพัฒนาที่ดินทำกินเพื่อให้ราษฎรมีที่ทำมาหากิน โครงการสร้างอ่างเก็บน้ำ การทำฝนเทียมเพื่อแก้ปัญหาฝนแล้ง การประมง การเลี้ยงสัตว์ การตั้งสหกรณ์ เป็นต้น พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวทรงเสด็จเยี่ยมทหาร ตำรวจและอาสาสมัครในจังหวัดต่าง ๆ ตลอดจนเขตที่มีภัย อันตราย รวมทั้งผู้บาดเจ็บจากการป้องกันประเทศตามโรงพยาบาลต่าง ๆ ในเขตกรุงเทพมหานครและต่างจังหวัด นอกจากนั้นยังทรงโปรดให้มีหน่วยแพทย์พระราชทาน เพื่อให้การรักษาพยาบาลราษฎรในชนบท เช่น ตรวจสุขภาพ ปลูกฝี ฉีดยา เป็นต้น ถ้าราษฎรคนใดเจ็บป่วยเรื้อรังก็ทรงรับเป็นคนไข้ส่วนพระองค์ ส่งมารักษาตัวที่กรุงเทพฯ ทรงโปรดให้มีการช่วยเหลือ และแก้ไขปัญหาในยามที่ราษฎรได้รับความทุกข์ยากจากภัยธรรมชาติต่าง ๆ เช่น น้ำท่วม ไฟไหม้ วาตภัย หรือจากผู้ก่อการร้าย
