พิธีแต่งงานแบบอิสลาม มีกฎอยู่ 5 ประการ ดังนี้

           1. ทั้งชายและหญิงต้องเป็นมุสลิม ถ้าแต่งงานกันไปแล้ว และมีฝ่ายใดฝ่ายหนึ่งเปลี่ยนศาสนา ให้ถือว่าความเป็นสามีภรรยาก็สิ้นสุดลงด้วย โดยถือว่าเป็นการผิดประเวณี

           2. ฝ่ายชายจะต้องจัดหาสินสอดทองหมั้น (มะฮัร) ให้กับฝ่ายหญิง และเมื่อแต่งงานกันแล้วสินสอดจะตกเป็นของฝ่ายหญิงเพียงคนเดียว

           3. จะต้องมีชายมุสลิมที่มีคุณธรรม มาเป็นพยานในการแต่งงานอย่างน้อย 2 คน

           4. จะต้องมี วะลีย์ หรือ ผู้ปกครองของฝ่ายหญิงเป็นผู้ทำหน้าที่แต่งงานให้ ซึ่งหากพ่อแม่ไม่สามารถทำหน้าที่ได้ ฝ่ายหญิงจะต้องตั้งบุคคลมาเป็นวะลีย์แทน

           5. วะลีย์ของฝ่ายหญิงต้องเป็นผู้เสนอคำขอแต่งงาน (อีญาบ) โดยมีเจ้าบ่าวขานรับ (กอบูล)

           จากนั้นจึงมีการเลี้ยงฉลองแต่งงานกันขึ้น เรียกว่า วะลีมะฮฺ โดยที่มีข้อแม้ว่างานเลี้ยงจะต้องไม่ฟุ่มเฟือย เนื่องจากความเชื่อของศาสนาอิสลามนั้น อนุญาตให้มีการฉลองงานแต่งงานได้ แต่จะต้องอยู่ในความพอดี เนื่องจากเป็นความสิ้นเปลือง
การแต่งงานกับผู้ที่ไม่ใช่มุสลิม
