หลังจากสำเร็จการศึกษาภาคศิลปไทยเป็นรุ่นแรก ก็ตั้งเป้าชีวิตว่าจะเป็นศิลปินสร้างงานศิลปะไปจนตาย โดยเริ่มชีวิตจากห้องเช่าเล็กๆ แต่เก็บเงินซื้อบ้านได้ภายใน 3 ปี
มีอยู่ครั้งนึงที่ได้รับทุนเดินทางไปดูงานต่างประเทศ (2524 – 2526) ทุนของสถาบันและองค์กรต่างๆ หลายครั้ง เมื่อครั้งที่ผมไปประเทศอังกฤษ ได้เห็นโบสถ์ที่วัดไทย วัดพุทธปทีป ในกรุงลอนดอน ซึ่งสร้างโดยรัฐบาลนายกฯ
เกียงศักดิ์ ก็รู้สึกมีความศรัทธา ผมจึงเสนอตัวเพื่อขอเขียนรูปถวายเป็นพุทธบูชา โดยไม่คิดค่าจ้างร่วมกับเพื่อนรุ่นน้องชื่อปัญญา วิจินธนสาร โดยใช้ชีวิตกว่า 4 ปีอยู่ที่นั่นท่ามกลางความยากลำบากต่างๆ นาๆ มีปัญหาสารพัด ผู้คนทะเลาะกัน พระไม่ลงรอยกับกรรมการ ไม่มีเงิน ไม่มีแรง

เมื่อครั้งกลับวัดร่องขุ่น ที่คนรุ่นพ่อร่วมกันสร้าง ที่ตอนนั้นมีสภาพทรุดโทรมเป็นที่สุด ก็เลยมีแรงดลใจว่าอยากสร้างวัดร่องขุ่น ด้วยศิลปะสมัยใหม่ เหมาะกับประเทศไทยภายใต้ร่มโพธิสมภารของในหลวง รัชกาลที่ 9 จึงลงมือ
