                สาเหตุที่ทำให้เกิดปัญหาสิ่งแวดล้อมมีอยู่ด้วยกันหลายประการแต่ที่สำคัญ คือ เกิดจากกระบวนการการผลิตโดยเฉพาะจากโรงงานอุตสาหกรรม การคมนาคมขนส่งก่อให้เกิดมลพิษ การพัฒนาประเทศ ก่อให้เกิดสภาวะแวดล้อมที่เปลี่ยนไป ทั้งทรัพยากร สิ่งแวดล้อม และภัยธรรมชาติ แต่ก็นับว่าน้อยมากถ้าเปรียบกับปัญหาที่เกิดขึ้นจากการกระทำของมนุษย์ เช่น การถางป่าเพื่อใช้ดินในการเพาะปลูก การตัดต้นไม้ทำฟืนและถ่าน เพื่อใช้เป็นพลังงานในการหุงต้ม เป็นต้น
