จากการสอบสวนทราบว่านายอภิชาติอาศัยอยู่ที่บ้านดังกล่าว 2 คนกับภรรยา มีอาชีพทำเครื่องจักสานพลาสติกจำพวกกระเป๋า ก่อนเกิดเหตุนายอภิชาติอยู่บ้านเพียงคนเดียว ส่วนภรรยาได้ไปส่งเครื่องจักสานและไม่อยู่บ้าน ขณะที่นายอภิชาตินอนหลับอยู่ที่เพิงพักข้างบ้านกำลังก่อสร้าง ซึ่งสามารถเข้าไปได้อย่างสะดวก คนร้ายจึงบุกเข้าไปใช้อาวุธปืนยิงที่โหนกแก้มนายอภิชาติ รวม 6 นัดซ้อน จนเสียชีวิตคาที่ ก่อนคนร้ายจะหลบหนีไป
