ด้วยเหตุที่แต่เดิมนั้น พื้นที่ในละแวกอำเภอบางพลีขึ้นชื่อว่า อุดมไปด้วยดอกบัวหลวง (Nelumbo nucifera Gaertn.) สะพรั่งไปทั่วทุกลำคลองหนองบึง เมื่อใกล้จะถึงวันทำบุญในช่วงออกพรรษา ชาวบ้านในอำเภอใกล้เคียงจึงมักพากันพายเรือมาเก็บดอกบัวไปถวายพระ ชาวบางพลีเห็นเช่นนั้นจึงอาสาเป็นผู้เก็บดอกบัวให้ ต่อมา เมื่อใกล้จึงวันออกพรรษาคราใด ชาวบางพลีจะพากันเก็บดอกบัวไว้คอยท่าเผื่อมีคนต่างถิ่นพายเรือมาขอรับดอกบัว นานวันนานปี จากน้ำใจของชาวบ้านบางพลี ก็กลายมาเป็นประเพณีรับบัว
