สมุนไพร หมายถึง พืชที่มีสรรพคุณในการรักษาโรค หรืออาการเจ็บป่วยต่างๆ จะต้องนำเอาสมุนไพรตั้งแต่สองชนิดขึ้นไปมาผสมรวมกันซึ่งจะเรียกว่ายา ในตำรับยานอกจากพืชสมุนไพรแล้วยังอาจประกอบด้วยสัตว์ และแร่ธาตุอีกด้วย เราเรียกพืช สัตว์ หรือแร่ธาตุที่เป็นส่วนประกอบของยานี้ว่า เภสัชวัตถุ พืชสมุนไพรบางชนิด เช่น กานพลู เป็นต้น
จากการศึกษาค้นคว้างานวิจัยเกี่ยวกับสมุนไพรกับการรักษาโรค พบว่า มีพืชสมุนไพรอยู่ 2 ชนิดที่สามารถรักษาโรคเบาหวานได้ คือ ว่านหางจระเข้ (Mourad, et al. 2013 ) กับตะไคร้ (Adejuwon, et al. 2007 ) โรคมะเร็ง (Ahmad, et al. 2014 ) สามารถใช้ฟ้าทะลายโจรในการรักษา และองค์ประกอบทางเคมีและเสถียรภาพของเยื่อหุ้มเซลล์บางอย่างในสมุนไพรสามารถรักษาโรคโลหิตจางได้ (Falade, et al. 2005)
