การออกแบบเครื่องจักรกล(Mechanical Engineering design) เป็นวิชาที่ว่าด้วยการนำความรู้ในด้านต่างๆในสาขาวิศวกรรมเครื่องกล มาประยุกต์ใช้ในการออกแบบชิ้นส่วนต่างๆ ของเครื่องจักรกล โดยการทราบถึงทฤษฎีการออกแบบและทฤษฎีความเสียหายในรูปแบบต่างๆไม่ว่าจะเป็นความเสียหายอันเนื่องมาจากการรับโหลดแบบสถิตหรือความเสียหายเนื่องจากการล้า วิชาการออกแบบเครื่องจักรกลก็จะมีประโยชน์ในการบำรุงรักษาเครื่องจักกลต่างๆได้
ในโครงการนี้ทางกลุ่มใช้วิชา Machine design เพื่อหาชนิดและขนาดของเฟืองกับสายพาน ที่จะใช้ในการประกอบตัวเครื่อง Sweeper Machine ว่าเราจำเป็นต้องใช้เฟืองชนิดใดหรือสายพานแบบใดที่เหมาะกับการนำมาใช้ประกอบตัวเครื่อง เนื่องจากว่าเฟืองและสายพานแต่ละชนิดนั้นมีจุดเด่น จุดด้อยแตกต่างกันไปเราจึงต้องศึกษาทฤษฎีนี้เพื่อเลือกใช้คุณสมบัติของชิ้นส่วนให้ตรงกับคุณสมบัติของตัวเครื่องที่เราได้ออกแบบไว้ ส่วนทฤษฎีในการหาขนาดของเฟืองและสายพานนั้น ใช้ในการหาขนาดเฟืองและสายพานที่เหมาะสมกับขนาดของตัวเครื่องและกลไกที่ได้วางไว้ในตัวเครื่อง
