การแข่งขันโพน เป็นประเพณีหนึ่งของภาคใต้ เชื่อว่าเริ่มมีขึ้นพร้อมๆ กับประเพณีชักพระเนื่องจากนิยมปฏิบัติต่อเนื่องกันมา ก่อนที่จะมีการชักพระในวันแรม 1 ค่ำ เดือน 11 คือ ในช่วงออกพรรษาประมาร ปลายเดือน 10 วัดต่างๆ จะเตรียมจัดประเพณีชักพระ โดยเริ่มตั้งแต่การทำบุษบก หุ้มโพนะและคุมโพน (ตีโพน) ก่อน เพื่อให้ชาวบ้านตามหมู่บ้านต่างๆ ได้ทราบว่าทางวัดจะจัดให้มีการชักพระตามประเพณีที่เคยปฏิบัติเป็นประจำทุกปี แต่ส่วนมากวัดจะอยู่ในละแวกเดียวกัน ทำให้ชาวบ้านไม่ทราบว่าเสียงโพนที่ตีเป็นของวัดใด ทำให้แต่ละวัดแข่งเสียงโพนกันว่าโพนะวัดใดจะเสียงดังกว่ากัน ในระยะแรกๆ นั้นจะตีแข่งกันเองภายในวัด ต่อมาจึงค่อยๆ นำโพนมาประชันกันตามกลางทุ่นนา หรือสถานที่ที่จัดเตรียมไว้

ส่วนการหุ้มโพนก็ถือเป็นประเพณีที่สำคัญเช่นกัน เพราะการแข่งขันโพนนอกจากจะใช้ฝีมือผู้ตีแล้วก็อยู่ที่การหุ้มโพนด้วยเช่นกัน โพนจะดังหรือไม่ดังขึ้นอยู่กับการหุ้มโพน โดยที่แต่ละวัดถือเป็นความลับเริ่มด้วยการหาไม้มาตัดเป็นท่อน ตามความต้องการ แล้วนำไม้นั้นมาเจาะรูให้กลวงเท่ากันตลอด แต่โพนะที่ใช้เข่งวันนั้นจะเจาะรูภายในทั้งสองด้านเป็นรูปอกไก่ ทั้งนี้เพราะต้องการให้เสียงก้อง และเจาะรูลูกสักที่ขอบบนขอบล่างในระยะเท่าๆ กัน ใช้หนังควายตัดเป็นรูปกลมขนาดโตเท่าปากของไม้ที่เจาะรูไว้ นำไปแช่หัวข่าหยวกกล้วย เมื่อตากจนแห้งสนิทแล้วนำมาหุ้มสอดไม้ลูกสักตรงที่เจาะรูไว้ แล้วขึงให้ตึงทั้งข้างบนและข้างล่าง
